Notes:

If your secret contains the name or logo of the series or is addressed like "Dear Fandom X, I think Y about you" there's no need to mark down the fandom again in the post. (Kinda figured this was a given, but…)

I suspect that Tom is just being careful about how he introduces and develops the pairings. I remember him mentioning that he was very careful not to put swear words or things that could be possibly considered inappropriate for children since he is marketing the books as For All Audiences, which has helped a lot in distributing the books to many places that wouldn't accept comics with a higher rating.

And you know how stupid people can get over queer relationships and their "appropriateness" for children. :/

I think he is walking on eggshells, trying to be subtle and only giving small nods in confirmation about where he is going, like when Annie told Jack that she thought Gamma and Zimmy are an item, and how in his formspring Tom never confirmed anything about their relationship beyond that they loved each other and that they were a couple -both things that have been stated in the comic, it's just that we only saw the couple part until now.

Now that I think about it, I also found it odd how we never saw Jeanne and her green dude boyfriend kiss, but there was no such problem with younger couples. Maybe he is trying not to get into "adult" moments?

We never see them kiss, eh? (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=772) You even see her unbutton her jacket. To expose her breests.

...Would you believe that I remember everything from that scene EXCEPT for the kiss? I found it odd that they were all undress-y and suggestive but wouldn't kiss, so I figured they were trying to be less blatant. NOPE. Just bad memory.

Queer relationships being considered "inappropriate" would end if queers and our allies stood up and stopped letting it happen, so. Saying that it's alright to hide the queers because that's how it is (especially when we're talking about a straight person doing this)? No excuse. There have been queers in stories aimed at young adults, and it's a little harder to get support for a project like that, but it's happened. And the world didn't end.

Saying that it's alright to hide the queers because that's how it is

...I never said it was alright. O_o I just said that I could see his reasoning for taking his time and being careful about how he presented those relationships.

I'm sorry, I exaggerated. I was sleepy and grumpy at the time, so.

I guess I'm just trying to say that there have been queers written honestly and openly for YA stuff. Not hidden in subtext forever, not 'they seem very close...", not connected with otherness- queer characters that come out and say it, and narratives that don't turn away right before a not-just-friends moment comes up. And nothing bad happened to the people who wrote that. They may have lost a portion of their audience, but they probably gained some new readers, so most likely it just about balances out.

When someone hides their queers, which I do believe that to some extent Tom is doing, it shows that they care more about not offending the anti-gay people (and not being the one to get people angry) than the actual queers in the audience. I can understand a queer person choosing not to bring down MORE homophobia on themselves, but straight people already are rarely affected by homophobia. If a straight person decides that a tiny bit of what the queers face every day is too big of a price to be inclusive, they are not a real ally. Bigots should not be compromised with. They should be taught better, and part of that is taking a hard line that their bigotry is not acceptable.

Of course, this is just my opinion. If you are queer and you are okay with straight authors handling their queer characters with kid gloves, then that's okay. But I'm not, and many other queers aren't, and that's okay too.
