You Don't Know Me secret, oh my God. I LOVE that book. "Mrs. Moonface, get a life. Get a nose ring, fly a kite. Get a boyfriend, learn to ski, just stop taking it out on me." "I didn't have soccer muscles. I didn't even have whiffle ball muscles." Aw man, that was such a great book. It's easy to hate on teen-angsty sort of books, but that one was so well done, I loved it.

My favorite bits involve Mr Steenwilly and the tuba that is actually a bullfrog and Violent Hayes's saxophone that is actually a monitor lizard.

And the long bits about how awesome his actual father would be, explaining the universe and girls to his son are heartbreaking when you realize they're just wish fulfillment fantasies he's having.

Done just a bit differently, if it had upped the dark humor just a bit more, it could have been mocking John's circumstances. If it had taken the humorous corkscrewing writing out, it would have been just another hopeless cut-and-dry teen angst book. But it was spot on in tone, and I'm in awe of the writer's craft and honesty.

Yessssss exactly! The book was just so honest and unpretentious and non-trying-to-hard, unlike most angsty teen books. It wasn't trying to be edgy, it was just telling a story. It was a great book.
