Maybe they loved it so much they're wordless? ;)

Gosh, your comments are the cutest! <3

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've felt the same way before. It's sucky, to be sure. :\ Unfortunately, I have a real knack for reading people, so it's almost second nature for me to recognize someone's true feelings...it can be problematic and depressing.

I guess just be glad that the person wants to leave you a review at all? They probably don't realize how transparent they're being, and they're trying to spare your feelings, so at least that proves they care enough about you to do that.

I'm the kind of reviewer who loves to fangirl a really good fic with long comments. When I post shorter reviews, it doesn't mean that I hate the fic, just that it didn't push all of my happy buttons or that there's nothing to say that I didn't already say in the previous comment. I figure a short review is always better than complete silence. Maybe the person your secret is about feels the same.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I can like a fic a lot and still find nothing particular to comment about. If the fic didn't hit my fangirl buttons then I can't think of many things to gush about. Sorry, OP. It's more about fangirliness than about quality for me.

Same here. Sometimes I really want to say nice things, but there's just nothing that popped out. "Great use of periods!" just doesn't cut it :(

[identity profile] vampirenaomi.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. One time I actually had an author send me message to complain that my reviews for his fic weren't as long as my reviews for another fic in the fandom. Apparently he completely ignored the fact that the other fic was about my favourite character and always had chapters that were at least 5,000 words long while his chapters were barely 1,000 words long and he never failed to write an AN about how much he hated my favourite character. Gee, I wonder why I found more things to fangirl in that other fic.

wtf creepy much? how ungrateful too! at least you left him a review O_O he sounds like a piece of work from that a/n anyway

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Good point. I'd find it really difficult to be overly effusive with someone who bashed my favorite character/ship :(

[identity profile] santagrover.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
hey bro just be happy that you're getting reviews! (:

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Why assume that, do you just paradoxically enjoy making yourself unhappy?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It probably actually means they didn't read the chapter/fic, and reviewed out of a sense of obligation, which may be the case if the commenter is a friend.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I don't like to gush endlessly, so for me a short review means I liked it. Otherwise I'd be going through saying "and I liked this and how you did this and I liked this and I liked this..." and most of the time I'd prefer to just say it was great and leave it at that.

[identity profile] tawabids.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw man I'm sure it's not so. I find it really, really difficult to comment on fic (I have a masochistic reaction to getting praise myself) and sometimes a fic will break right through that wall for me and I'll write screeds and screeds and quote it like a manic thing, and sometimes I'll really, really like a fic but in a more academic/rational way, so it won't make me go all emotion-crazy in my review and I'll only be able to manage one line or two about how I enjoyed it. But if I leave a review at all, I genuinely enjoyed the fuck out of it. Perhaps this reviewer is like that?

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Why on earth would they leave you a nice comment if they hated your fic? Does that really make sense to you?

No they liked your fic, they simply didn't find it quite as engaging to their imaginations as those other fics did. Sometimes you can love something but just feel like it doesn't need to be elaborated on. While perfectly enjoyable, it just isn't inspiring.

Yeah, I can see you wish you got a longer review, but be honest with yourself. Not every chapter is worthy of that. Some chapters are mopping up or elaborating on ideas that were set up in earlier chapters and "More of the same that I like" doesn't really deserve to be analysed.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding. If someone hated my fic, why would leave a nice review? Either they'd tell me in a flame, or say nothing and go bitch about it in an anonymous hate meme. Leaving a nice review for a fic you hate just makes no logical sense. They may not have liked it as much as other fics they've read but appreciation isn't a love/hate dichotomy.

[identity profile] kasumi-sora.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say...sometimes I'm just lazy. I want people to know I enjoyed their work, but it 2 am and I'm just not willing to gush in length.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I'll really love a fic but not know what to specifically say that I liked about it. Don't assume so much. You can't know what's going through that person's mind.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I read through other people's reviews before I give a review, myself. If someone else covered whatever I was going to say, then my review will probably be less verbose. The length and depth of my reviews reflect more so on what I like and how I'm feeling than how talented the author is, though I admit those types of reviews probably aren't much help to the author.

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't enjoy the lack of gratitude you're expressing here, OP.

I love writing long reviews, but when I don't it's not because I dislike a work and I'm being nice, it's because I'm either lazy or tired or said work leaves me wordless. Either way, if I like a fic, I prefer to say something nice about it instead of not reviewing at all.

So stop being an ungrateful ass and appreciate the reviews you got. Most people just read and off they go.
