A bit off-topic: I want to watch this show (as I rather like Vampires, though I despite Twilight and the likes of it) but keep hearing mixed opinions about it. :( Some say it's amazing and other's that it's absolute crap... and eh.

OT: That sounds... quite odd. Fans tend to be like that in general, though.

The first two seasons were really fun (not amazing, incredibly deep, but just fun to watch), seasons 3 and 4 were, depending on the episode, somewhere between mediocre and unbearable shit. It's really sad because I used to love watching this show, but I've stopped watching in the middle of season 4 because it just sucked so much.

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Does the end of the second season leave anything major untied? Because your reply got me thinking that I may just get the first and second season, if they are that fun. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Different OP:

I enjoyed S3 and 4. Denis O'Hare and Fiona Shaw were flawless.

DA. Every episode has a cliffhanger at the end, but pursuing the season 2 cliffhanger just leads to disappointment and pain. I wish I'd stopped watching after season 1, because season 1 involved the pursuit of a serial killer. Season 2 starts to get more weird than worthwhile.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
same anon as above: there are usually cliffhangers at the end of each season, but that shouldn't be a reason not to enjoy the first two seasons. There are definitely fun elements in season 3, a couple of really hilarious characters, but the overall storyline sucked. Season 4 was just a trainwreck. True Blood has the same problem many shows have: they get absolutely AMAZING side characters who are often more interesting than the main characters, and then kill them off after five episodes. It just gets frustrating after a while.

True Blood is nice entertainment, but nothing more. If you like vampires/supernatural things, it is a must try. Just be ready...There is as much annoying crap and there is awesome.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's start with this, it's nothing more then a badly written and badly acted cheesy soap opera that was based off a horrible book series.

Knowing this, it can have an addictive quality to it and many people like that cheesy quality it has to it.

I got through about 2 seasons but after the first episode of season 3 I was done. I watched it because I love supernatural themes in shows, and I can deal with a little cheese but it became too much for me after a while.

Plus I cannot stand Sookie, I just wanted her to die off in every episode.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I can't really suggest anything except giving it a try to see if it's for you. It is a polarizing show, but, though I could be wrong, I think a lot of the people who like it still feel it's over-the-top and a bit ridiculous -- they just find it entertaining.

I felt like the first couple seasons were played a little more straight and were a more mellow mix of serious drama/suspense, weirdness/shock value, and cheesy soap opera stuff (at least, that's how I remember it). Since then, it's gotten a lot more over-the-top. I think it can be fun sometimes, but it is wearing thin on me, to the point where I'm not sure if I'll bother with the next season or not.

I was only mildly disturbed when he called Arlene's kids 'teacup humans' because I understood the implication that Eric had, in his thousand year life, no doubt fed on children and enjoyed it (it messed with my reality disconnect). But I was fucking pissed when he yelled at Pam for trying to protect his stupid ass. They're as devoted to each other as Eric was devoted to his Sire, she's a tough, dangerous, unsentimental vampire who's only vulnerable with Eric, and he yelled at her??

Fuck Eric Northman for that.

But I loved Pam's breakdown in her last scene of the season, for recognizing Sookie's Magic Vagina. LOL

Here here! I got sick real fast of Eric this season but nothing turned me against him faster than his treatment of Pam.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Because fandom loves Pam and hates Sookie and HOW DARE ERIC YELL AT PAM BECAUSE OF SOOKIE.

I'm so tired of Pam. She's a one-note character and it never changes. Booooring.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss book!Pam. And I especially miss the Pam and Sookie friendship from the book. I'm so pressed about the exclusion of that from the show.

[identity profile] kirby-crow.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd heard she was more interesting in the book, but in the series she's just "Wah wah, why does everyone love Sookie?!!"

I swear, she's asked that at least 20 times. I wish I could tell her "because she's written that way and you're not". :-/

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally have never got why everyone is so wet for Eric in the first place, so you know everything he does makes me wonder why that's the thing that apparently pissed fans off the most? Sure, he's a vampire...and I prefer vampires who are a bit douchey to the ones who mope for 500 pages but there's just something about Eric I can't get into. Then again, I feel the same about Bill. The only vamps in TB who haven't annoyed me are Pam and Russell.

Personal betrayal always feels worse than more abstract, general evils.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, this kind of reminds of how a lot of people fangirled The Joker until there was one comic where he raped a woman (iirc correctly, he did it because one of his henchmen didn't tell him he had a wife. So he raped her to teach him a lesson. Yeah, The Joker doesn't have to make sense) and then a lot of people flipped the fuck out

Apparently, The Joker could gas a class full of kindergartners for kicks, beat the fuck out of the only person who really cares about him (Not to mention the fact that he literally drove Harley insane in the first place), cripple Babs, straight up KILL Jason Todd, and generally be a sociopathic menace, but him raping someone (which is horrible, don't get me wrong) was what made some people call him a monster. What.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not really the same, tho. In fiction, a lot of people consider rape to be more evil than anything else. Like Darth Vader blew up a planet and killed a room full of children, but if he raped Padme a lot of people would have freaked out.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil

Also, that comic wasn't even canon, so I don't know why it would have made them stopped fangirling him.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It was mostly some of the crazier Joker fans. They don't really make much sense.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. This scene didn't make me angry with Eric. The whole thing was just one big "Ugh, Eye-roll" moment for me. For both Eric and Pam. The bottom line, Sookie is just not worth all the high-school drama and trouble she causes for everyone around her.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Vampire Eric is one of the most overrated characters on television.
