Same here. I do enjoy seeing the more sensitive parts of Snape, but in order to enjoy them they have to be rare. The very reason I find his character so interesting is because of his darkness. Take that away, and you are left with a useless, one-dimensional character. A good-hearted Snape just isn't Snape.

Agreed. I've just finished reading a fic in which post-saga headmaster!Snape (it was written before Deathly Hallows) was basically Dumbledore in a wig, and I'm like, what's the point?

Agreed it's one of the reasons I think the movies are poor adaptations of the books, especially the DH movies. Also; honestly after reading FW, HMS STFU, and Dedfromsnake, I've come to the conclusion that many woobifiers don't like anything about the actual canon character that is Severus Snape.

Agreed. I hate how saintly the nutty snapefen tries to make him look: yes, his childhood was pretty tragic and so was his life but he wasn't a poor, misunderstood woobie, he was a jaded asshole.
There's this great thing about HP books, the idea that no one is completely good nor completely evil and everyone is able of redemption, is that so hard to understand? Srsly

Thank you.

I've read all the books for the first time recently and I knew he was a bit of a dick (more than in the films) but I wasn't aware exactly how he could be almost downright cruel for no reason. I think that's lost in the films. Also, I struggle with it because he's picking on children. I still like the character and get why he's popular but there's some sort of internal screening process in my head that can't get over that. Not saying it's any better to bully adults and he has some issues that made him hostile towards Harry in particular but yeah, I found it hard going sometimes.

On the other hand at least he didn't go for Umbridge levels of bullying kids. I've never wanted to punch a screen and/or book so much.

As somebody who is totally neutral about Snape as a character most of the time but keeps seeing bizzare versions of him crashing into fic about characters I actually want to read about (who naturally, in fic, all want to bang him), amen.

[identity profile] steph313.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I never liked Rickman's Snape because he was never mean enough. Snape in the book could be a serious dick sometimes, and we never saw that in the films.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. I like Snape as he is: a very not nice guy. My issue with book!Snape is that we are supposed to accept him as a good guy as if the good things he did (for the wrong reasons considering his feelings for Lily involve stalking behavior and wanting her husband and son dead so he could be with her) absolves him of his horrible actions and that somehow Harry would name his kid after him. In some ways, I prefer movie!Snape because I can accept movie!Snape as a very flawed flawed but ultimately good guy.

As soon as I ready that "played for laughs" line, I immediately thought of that fucking stupid scene in Goblet of Fire where Ron and Harry are discussing who they are going to ask to the Ball in class, and Snape keeps casually hitting them over the head. And it's played for laughs! Oh har har, Snape is physically assaulting the students. The hilarity! /s

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It's a curse, but I will always love assholes :(

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I am with you, anon, entirely. I feel like fandom has almost ruined him for me. I think he's fascinating, in part because he's a complete fucking asshat and I want to kick him in the face. But the way fandom romanticizes everything about him makes me resent hearing his name. I even resent the word "Always".

I don't take people seriously when they say he's their favourite character and then go off about how honorable and kind and selfless and sexy (WUT) he was. That's not Snape, guys, that's Alan Rickman in Sense & Sensibility or some shit, not the dickhead Potions master who bullied his students and invented violent dark magic and took out his personal fucked up emotions on an 11 year old boy. It's kind of telling when you have to blame all his wrongdoings on the people around him just to make him remotely likable.

A+ rant. I can't even stand talking to other Snape fans anymore, being one who thinks his mean comments and rage problems are kind of integral to the character. (And also funny, because it's so over-the-top.)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/___flight_risk/ 2011-10-24 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I thought I was the only one who now feels rage towards the word "always." I mean, really. It's a word. BUT IT DRIVES ME CRAZY.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm not alone here. I actually don't feel like I can relate to other fans of Snape at all... while he IS my favorite in the entire series and one of my top favorite fictional characters from ANY fandom, I certainly do not justify his behavior or make excuses for him. I think its very blind that fans can defend him yet hate on James for some of the same reasons. I love him, but I can also admit to myself that he is a terrible, awful person (but endlessly fascinating and entertaining). I can only like him because he is fictional (I am hopelessly addicted to anti-heroes).
