I am a fan of canon ships. I lose interest in a ship if it seemed viable but one character is paired with another in canon simply because.. I prefer things to have a chance as opposed to wrecking a relationship just to ship my mess. I can go elsewhere to OMG SQUEE over pairs.
I disagree, but that's just my opinion. If a character is shown as being down with the opposite sex I don't default to thinking they swing both ways and I think doing so is just stretching for one's purposes. But hey I don't own lj I can't control what people post :U

But that's because you're (apparently, please correct me if I've misread what you've said upthread) straight yourself. I'm bisexual, and my default is that a character, if not otherwise stated, can swing pretty much any way they can. In my perspective, I'm not stretching the truth for my own purposes, just like in yours you're not stretching it for your own either. But the fact is, we both are. Our own sexuality affects the way we interpreting characters. And that's fine! what's less fine is shaming other people for shipping two men or two women because you happen to default them to straight.
Frankly, that's what I don't get about this thread. Why don't you just scroll on? where are the kicks in shaming people because they interpret characters differently than you do?

Indeed I am straight though as you probably gathered I am not overly interested in sex. I would have it if I got married but otherwise.. lol nope no use for it. You can take the characters as default bisexual but, from my way of thinking, the 'natural' orientation is the one that passes on your genetics and that's what most fictional characters are unless it's hinted they are bi/otherwise. Note I never want to have kids myself but I still think there's certain biological things about people that dictate their base features, like non-"Wow John you're so heterosexual" "Yeah man I am" sexual preference in fictional characters.
idk just look at all the replies, most of them terribly off-base. You at least present a decent flipside of the coin but a lot of these people are just mad and.. it's fun :C C:

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)Do you see what I mean? Just because canonically character A is in love with character B, doesn't mean that IN THE FICTIONAL WORLD THEY LIVE IN they couldn't ever fall in love with character C. You have to look at in the context of these characters actually existing in some parallel universe.
Some things in canon are unquestionable. If someone has blue eyes, that's canon and it's unquestionable, because we can see it for ourselves. There is no other alternative reading of the text. But if character A and character C have a ~touching scene, there is no one way to interpret it, because we can't possibly KNOW EXACTLY what is/was going on in their heads and what it means to them. We might have an IDEA of what their feelings are, but we can't know with 100% certainty.
SO. It's perfectly fine to only want to ship canon couples, whether they be gay/straight/bi/whatever. But to say that non-canon couples aren't canon -- no, that's just not right. You're taking canon events and simply interpreting them differently. That doesn't make any of the events non-canon, especially since pretty much all the time canon fem/slash fics acknowledge a canonically heterosexual's character's orientation in some way (usually by making them bi or having their same sex attraction to be an ~exception -- which really can't be disproved by canon anyway).
