I can't fathom why they all haven't been practicing with crossbows and hatchets, etc. Instead they are clinging to guns which they dare not use. I mean, yeah, they seemed to have cottoned on to the idea that maybe giving everyone a handgun might be problematic being that some of them seem too slow to get why guns = bad idea. But, seriously, they've been scrounging for a while, has no one considered giving everyone a big ass cleaver? Or a sword? Or even a crow bar? Hell a long sharp stick would go a long way.

I'm all for survival stories, but I just find it highly unrealistic that it would take people this long to figure out basic skills. Even the slow ones should know the drill by now. They should have created hand signals and practiced maneuvers. They should be carrying gear, like compasses, soundless weapons, binoculars, maps. Instead it seems like they are winging everything as if it's the first time they've encountered zombies.

I'm anticipating the sword-wielder my brother says will come along later on in the story, but yeah, I definitely agree. Not to mention that it can't be that easy to hit the target when shooting, so some sort of edge/point weapon is probably better. And quieter. Couldn't they just seek out some really small towns for supplies? I mean, there would be a lot less zombies than in Atlanta!

I agree on the gear and teamwork. It's sort of turned into a protector/protected group instead of a survival team, which can't be a good idea in the long run. It's a little more understandable with the main character since he's been in a come for most of the outbreak, but he should have started organising by now. He's a trained policeman! As is his friend, and I don't know what his excuse is.

Yeah, I agree, they are trying to force this tiny group into a protector/protected community, but it just doesn't work in my mind. They are too small, too mobile, have too little protection. And there's no reason for it either. There are only two kids and both are old enough to contribute. It's not like they are toddlers or babies. And what's more it's not doing anyone any favors. If the "protectors" get injured, the protected are just going to get slaughtered.

I get the feeling that the writers have never actually seen what groups do in survival situations. It's quite surprising actually. Kids become grown ups very, very quickly when it's a matter of life and death. They learn very, very fast. In some ways they are more emotionally flexible than the adults, more willing to ditch what doesn't work and find something that does. And they do it really at an astonishingly young age. We coddle our kids because we can, but when we can't, they want to survive.

This is pretty much what I think too. Maybe they're just clinging to the remnants of their previous lives and things will change as the story unfolds.

In a weird way... maybe.

But it just doesn't make any sense. As a parent, I know my first instinct for my children would be to protect them and give them absolutely every tool I could to have them protect themselves. Which means, I'd have had them learning how to shoot a bow and arrow from day one. If I wanted to give them something to cling to, it would be like reading them to bed or some other comfort ritual. Otherwise, school is in session, and those kids would be taught how to fix an engine and what sort of things to scrounge for and how to hide. Those kids should have been set to siphoning gas or some other useful work. They'd be much happier knowing they can do something to support their community.

I'm not even a parent, but that was my first thought too; give them as many ways to defend themselves and take care of themselves as possible.

Reading/telling stories would OTOH be a wonderful way of providing comfort and creating a "family" feeling, I'd say!

Anyway, I'm told that Carl at least will have a more active role in the future (but I've no idea how).
