It always has been. There's a difference between a try-hard and someone who puts a lot of genuine effort into something.

To clarify, at least the way I'd use the word:

A normal person making an effort might produce a music video heavy on the symbolism because it's appropriate to the song, represents something important to them and maybe even tells a story. A try-hard goes heavy on the symbolism simply to appear artistic, and the result is largely irrelevant to anything ever, as well as pretentious.

Where Lady Gaga fits into this depends on your opinion of her.
