Addendum: Okay, I don't watch DBZ, so I may be wrong about Vegeta, but the point is still there.

Yeah, Vegeta didn't appear till mid-way through the first season of Dragonball Z. There was an entire series before it (Dragonball) that didn't have him in it.

I'm sure there are other exampled of character who came into the series' later on and ended up becoming fan-favorites. I'm surprised it's such an issue in the SPN fandom. I've never seen so much butthurt over a supporting character.

Alec from Dark Angel. From my understanding, there was quite a bit of butthurt from fans of Max and Logan, over Alec's popularity during the second season.

Of course Alec was played by Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean Winchester on Supernatural. I know a lot of fans watched Dark Angel after seeing Jensen on Supernatural, and I'd bet dollar to donuts most of them liked Alec the best after watching, and good percent of those fans are the same ones who complain about Castiel and his popularity now. It's like the fandom circle of life.

I think you've got your timing cause/effect off: Alec was super popular in Dark Angel at the time, to the extent that the guy who played Logan got butthurt and started counting lines, insisting he got given some of Alec's lines, trying to prevent Alec becoming the love interest, etc. And Alec largely appeared in the first place because Ben was so popular in season 1.

I ended up watching Supernatural because I saw an ad, did a double take, and said, "Is that Alec from Dark Angel?" My housemate lent me the first two seasons on the spot :)
