Of course. All you have to do it put a little bit of code somewhere (usually in a comment) and you can track IP addresses. That's the easiest way, but there are others.

Nothing on the internet is truly anonymous.

So someone can embed code, invisibly, in an LJ comment, and when I reply to it they can see my IP address? How does that work? Can you protect yourself against it?

Now somewhat freaked out.

As far as I know, the code just copies your IP address. I used the code years ago & don't remember exactly how it works. Whether you you post anonymously or not, you're on a computer that has an IP address.

Again, nothing online is truly anonymous. I'm not saying this to be snarky or rude, but did you not know that?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I knew, I guess. But I sort of assumed it took a fair bit of computer know-how to do it. Never thought any idiot could just paste a bit of code into a comment and track you down. On reflection, I suppose this was naive :(

Getting an IP address off an anonymous comment isn't all there is to tracking you down though.

And if you're worried, there are always proxies.

Nope. LJtoys used to have it and it's probably out there elsewhere You stick the coding in a comment or in the entry itself if you're the OP and and it gives you IP addresses. With LJtoys, if they were logged in, it would give username too, but it wasn't always reliable so there's that. I used it to keep track of a fannish stalker type and I'm so not much of an expert.

...seconding this.
