People treated him like a loser at first but in the end everyone loves him and respects him, even though he's not exactly a good father nor a responsible adult (you don't just go "Oh hi, I'm quitting my job and moving back to my hometown!". It also bugged me how he never told Barnaby about his power loss. Such a dumb move.)
IDK, Kotetsu just feels like a self-insert to me because characters end up loving him when he's still the same loser that he was at the beginning of the show, even more useless now as a hero because his power only lasts for a minute.

I think most people already had a good impression on him but was severely outdated. I don't think people in general, the ones who actually knew Kotetsu and not Wild Tiger, liked him outside that he was a great partner for Barnaby.

But that's because they like him as a person, not because he's perfect or they think he's perfect. He supports them and lends them an ear when they need it. He is genuinely a good person, motivated to do good for its own sake. They didn't care that he ended up kinda useless; they thought he was great for trying. Going from being seen as a loser to getting some respect was the entire point of his character arc from beginning to end, and he definitely has enough flaws to not be a Stu.

I'm not saying you have to like Kotetsu or think he's a well-written character but he really doesn't read as a perfect fantasy escapist self-insert so much as just a likeable character.

Was he supposed to keep working until he got himself killed or someone else died on his watch before retiring?

The not talking about his power loss was one of his worse mistakes, but it's also shown as such...

And that he was a lying liar that lies... alot. Sure it was more that he didn't want people to worry about (or get close to) him but it was still pretty dumb.

Self insert? I...have been trying to reply to this for 5 minutes now and keep deleting because I don't even know how one would arrive at that conclusion to be able to defend it. He's a nice person. So people like him despite his flaws. It really is that simple.

I respect your opinion but it just doesn't make sense to me why people like him so much when he stays so irresponsible and immature throughout the series. It's forgivable to act like that when you're young but Kotetsu's in his mid/late thirties :/

But people call him on it. And his mistakes have repercussions. When he acts like an idiot, people react badly and he suffers from it. But since he doesn't have bad intentions and he is a genuinely nice person they eventually forgive him.

Kotetsu is also juggling a lot more than the average person in their mid-thirties. Is it okay for him to keep things from Barnaby and not see his daughter so much and etc etc? No. But he still puts in an effort to do things right, and I think it certainly counts for something that he is dealing with this hero life. It doesn't really give him chances to do things right, sometimes outright destroying them even when he honestly tries (can't do much about the bridge blowing up in front of his car on his way to see Kaede, really).

So...I love him for the person he is even if he has those flaws. He doesn't do these things out of spite or to be mean. He's not even "just trying to get by". Kotetsu is a character who does try hard to do things for his friends and his family, his immaturity combined with the situations his job does put him in doesn't cancel out what kind of person he is. He's someone I would like to know, that's for sure.

The first half is a little hard to see - but I can make out the last 3 lines clearly!

Yeah, that's what I thought. I tried all sorts of different text effects but I couldn't get the Anju and Muramasa lines clear without cutting off Kotetsu's sexy face. XD
