Oh, it is really not that difficult, especially when you have a few outraged people getting together, especially if any of those outraged people are BNFs. Googling the IP might be enough. I've seen shit like this go down, not for a few years, but I've seen it happen in fandom and I've seen cyberstalkers use IPs to find people's RL info with an hour's work. :/

But using IPs to find someone's RL info is different from using it to find out who they are on LJ. I've seen the latter thing happen in fandom recently and while it was streamlined by being the cooperative effort of a bunch of people, it wasn't as simple as googling the IP. It was only possible because the person they were trying to identify had posted, logged in, to a community that logged IPs and someone who could see those IPs went digging through posts and spotted it on a couple of the mystery user's logged in comments.

Googling the IP will definitely get you their location, which could narrow it down. Say you find out your target lives in Kentucky. Now you ask, "Who's in Harry Potter fandom, active right now, and lives in Kentucky?" Many people have their general region listed in their userinfo, or simply make it known in general conversation. If you're involved in fandom and know a lot of people, knowing a location could really narrow it down for you, especially if the target is someone who also knows a lot of people in fandom.

Then there's the matter of, if you have their RL name, you might be able to find them on Facebook, and some people use the same email for Facebook and fandom activities, or even keep the two loosely linked as an open secret. Would work for Google+ too.

What's a lot more likely, though, is that either the OP de-anoned, or people whispered behind their back. Most people on kinkmemes will tell a friend or two that they think they can trust that they wrote this fic. And maybe those friends are mostly trustworthy, but they share it with a few other people they think they can trust, and so forth, until it becomes an open secret. Plenty of times I've known who wrote something on a kinkmeme because someone (usually the author) told me.
