It's almost Halloween- but more importantly, it's almost NaNoWriMo!

Is anyone else doing it? ♥

I'm thinking about it. I got this idea today that I'm thinking of doing. I need to get busy working on it though if I'm going to attempt it. Either NaNo or there this mini one with a 30k minimum word I'm thinking of using that idea for.

Have fun with that, and good luck~ ♥

I wish NaNo weren't so obviously meant for students. Anyone who works in the real world is slammed during November/December because of the upcoming holiday. I literally do not have time to do when I'm working 16 hour days most weeks :(

Re: Just Curious~ <3

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
It is? Huh, I never thought about it like that... I started doing it during High School, which meant I was a student, but younger than the suggested demographic... I'm sorry. :(

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
NaNo is especially tough for me, personally, because November is really busy. Especially at the end of November, prepping for finals.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-28 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I find November just as stressful as I did when I was a student.

Which is why I'm going to attempt this: http://wrisomifu.livejournal.com/profile

Students are slammed then too. Effing finals prep and every professor assuming they're the only ones assigning you anything. There's Camp NaNo in April for those in retail.

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I specifically haven't done it yet because November is exam month here, so definitely NOT for students. I'm taking a lighter course load this year so I'm going to give it a try, but even so I doubt I'll make it.

I'm doing it! Doing some worldbuilding first though, to make the word counts fly.

Re: Just Curious~ <3

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Nice! I'm mostly building off of last years novel, but I'm hoping to actually have a plot this year... -_-;;

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what? I think I will. I am going to be pretty busy during the beginning of November, but if I never get started on this, I'll never do it.

I am trying to apply for this job online. I spent the last four hours retooling my resumé and writing a cover letter, getting my list of references together, etc. I finally try to upload these documents and now the website is not letting me because of some XML error or something that didn't exist four hours ago.

Just want to get a feel for something here:

What are people's views on repurposing fanfic, taking out references to canon and turning it into original fiction? I have a class that wants us to submit prose writing samples before we apply, and the only things I have written recently are either in screenplay format or fanfics. I wrote it all, obviously, so there's no plagirism issue. I was just wondering what people's views are in general.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-28 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on how much you change it.

Long respone ahead

(Anonymous) 2011-10-28 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
First of all, what are you applying for? The class itself? I'm a little confused by your wording.

That said, I'm not really sure I'm okay with the whole repurposing fanfic thing when I think about it. Because if you did your job right with your fanfiction, then the characterizations should mirror that of the canon you're borrowing from. If you did that right, change the names and then claim the characters as your own for some sort of profit (in this case I suppose it would be getting into this class?), isn't that essentially stealing? It's like tracing over someone else's lineart and saying it's completely 100% yours and expecting people to give you something for it, which is something I'm rather uncomfortable with.

If you didn't do your job right with your facfiction, and everyone is OOC, then it was basically original fiction to being with, and you're in the clear, but my question to you then is why are you writing this as fanfiction in the first place? I would assume it's to get attention from people whom you know will sit down and read it because you pasted x character's face onto your own character.

So basically you're either a good fan author with shitty morals or a shitty fan author who was just borrowing faces to have a set base of readers. :/

But I'm just a random internet anon, so feel free to take this with a grain of salt. If you feel your work is good enough to get you whatever you're looking for, and you don't really give two shits about what I've said, that's perfectly valid. Go ahead and submit your stuff. Just make sure you have at least some physical descriptions in there for your characters (unless you want them to remain unseen or ambiguous or whatever) because with fanfiction physical descriptions aren't always necessary. If I'm a fan of, let's say Star Trek TOS, then I know what Shatner's Kirk looks like. You don't have to introduce me to how he looks. In original works it's usually best to have at least some idea of what the characters look like.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

I'd say if it's something that doesn't rely heavily on knowledge of canon and could stand on its own with name changes and maybe a location change, you're probably fine. Particularly if it's like, already an AU, or a bandfic/RPF in general, usually.

OTOH, I was once reading submissions for a high school fiction magazine and at least two were really blatant and poorly disguised Hetalia fics. I eyerolled like crazy because there was no plot (why the hell all the people in the class except one seemed to think "short story" equalled "no point, purpose or conflict" I couldn't say) no introduction to the characters, and one of them was referred to as like, "his Balkan friend" I think, which was what gave it away as a Hetalia fluff piece.

It's got to be unrecognizable as a fanfic. Like if you where to post it here you shouldn't get people who read and and be "that sounds like these characters or the plot of this show."

There was an discussion on ONTD about how Amazon was publishing anyone who wanted to submit and someone said how they were reading something that got published as original fiction and thought the whole family dynamics thing sounded a lot like Supernatural. So they looked up the author and found out it was a fanfic with all the names and setting changed.

So basically, don't do that.
