The fact that she's so well-known probably adds to her popularity as well, and I can definitely see why people would ship it, but I just can't get behind a lot of the headcanon about them. Pity, really, because they are terribly cute when done right.

I know what you mean. IIRC a lot of people are divided when it comes to Napoleon because of all the wars he got France involved in, among other things, but I think it would still be an interesting dynamic! I'm surprised there's not more of him around since he had an anime appearance as well.

Napoleon is so much more morally ambiguous, plus he's not conventionally anime-attractive, which I think detracts from his popularity.

I think France will always be kind of in love with her, but I don't think ANY nations have one-and-only-one true love, let alone France, so it doesn't mean other people haven't been incredibly important to him too.

Then again, I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting watsonian explanations for France's behavior/personality as well as the doylist 'that's what the stereotype is!' They're people, and influences helped make them who they are. But some people don't enjoy that kind of nitpicky meta, and nobody should act like they have the Only Right Answer Which Dovetails With My OTP.

I think the same applies to many of the famous figures of the French Revolution as well, and so Jeanne seems to be the most logical choice in the end since everyone more or less agrees that she was a hero in every sense of the word.

That's how I feel as well. That's not to say that they forget about all the things that their people have done for them, but at the same time, their lives are so long that it just seems silly to me for them to be hung up on any one mortal for all eternity.

Exactly. There's absolutely nothing wrong with disagreeing about something as personal as headcanon so long as it stays civil. While I'm more of a doylist myself, I am very much appreciating where this thread is going, especially since I used to be so afraid to offer my opinion on this particular pairing in the past due to its popularity.
