I liked all the characters in Tangled: Rapunzel, Flynn, Goethe, Maximus, etc. I find the mother fascinating and worthy of exploration but I don't get the love and thought process behind people thinking that Rapunzel should've appreciated her more. She's extremely manipulative and keeps Rapunzel locked in a tower, not to keep her safe and not b/c she loves her--she doesn't--but to keep Rapunzel from being discovered and rescued and taken back to her real parents who mourned her. Her motivation isn't to keep Rapunzel near her b/c she loves her and would miss her; it's to keep Rapunzel nearby and within her grasp so that Rapunzel's hair will keep her beautiful and young forever. She doesn't love Rapunzel at all or if she does then it's an extremely unhealthy, possessive love (and I don't see this in the movie at all) or she would want Rapunzel to have her own life; not be locked into a tower and isolated until the day she, Rapunzel died, which is what Goethe wants, not Rapunzel. She may go on trips to get stuff for Rapunzel but that doesn't mean she cares for her. She goes to get Rapunzel stuff so she'll shut up her whining and complaints about wanting to go outside. The stuff functions as a temporary distraction from Rap.'s isolation and loneliness. It also allows Goethe to have normal, healthy, social interaction with others so that she, Goethe, doesn't have the loneliness and isolation that Rapunzel does. It wouldn't surprise to find out she has sex with others and even has friends and that she uses the trips as a cover that allows her to visit these friends, etc.
