It works because the furry fandom is a breeding ground for Geek Social Fallacies. They're so insistent on ACCEPTING EVERYTHING!!! that too many of them will defend people who do and say really heinous shit TO THE DEATH because guys we can't judge anyone. IMO it's a big part of what gives furries a bad name in the first place.
