Notes:

Somebody's been spamming the submissions post with old secrets, apparently (for what actual purpose, I'm not sure). Just give me a heads up and I'll take the repeats down.

You could try talking to your dad about it.

[identity profile] dark-kaomi.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No, that's not weird at all. And yeah, you should talk to him about it.

This secret is really makes me sad for some reason. If you like Voyager, why not watch a couple episodes with him and then ask him about the fic. If you are up to it and he still wants something like that, maybe you could write something for him. Or, just randomly write a fic and send it to him with this secret? I bet he'd love that.

I wanna write Voyager fic for your dad. :C

You should watch the show with him! The guilt will go away if you face it head on. Leave it alone, and it'll rot and fester and make you feel worse.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Aww. I don't know why but this makes me really sad and now I feel bad for both of you :(

Talk to him. Do you watch it now? You could surprise him with a fic, then see if he remembers the details of his old request and write that one too.

What would talking to my dad accomplish? Not trying to be snarky, just genuinely curious what the point of the conversation is meant to be. We don't have a bad relationship but we're not best friends and I'm no Daddy's girl. Sometimes I just remember this request and think that it could have been a really good bonding moment had I not been so embarrassed.

It would take a weight out of your mind, at the very least. And if he had felt hurt, or anything, you would clear out a past ache, even if it was something small. It's the little details that matter, OP.

I would say because you're not best friends and you're not Daddy's girl is the exact reason to do it. Because it could be a way to show him you care about him and love him.

My Dad and I are close, but we're not at the same time, we're both terrible at showing affection, and we wind each other constantly. I love him, and think he's hilarious, but he's also a quiet-er but mischievously evil man, who loves me to pieces. So we don't show affection to each other that often, but it means that when we do, it's more meaningful.

You don't have to make it a big deal. You can just bring it up casually. "Remember that time when...?" The fact that you're aware of a missed bonding opportunity means you can find others to share with your dad. You don't have to write him anything. Just sit down and watch it with him, or find another series you think both of you would like and ask him to watch it with you. Because one day, unfortunately, he's going to be gone and you don't want to sit around thinking, "If only I had taken more time with him..."

I too had moments like that in my childhood, not fandom-related, but moments where my dad or grandfather tried to bond with me and I was too interested in my own shit. My grandfather was a musician and wanted to teach me guitar and I was too impatient. I'll always regret that. It would have been a lasting reminder of him I could always carry with me. If I had time today, I'd learn it myself as a tribute to him.

Unless he was asking you to write a porno, there's no need to feel ashamed and embarassed.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
...That is an odd thing to ask of their child. Not bad, just, I don't know, very out of nowhere?

Do you like writing a lot and your dad knew and wanted to bond with you, or something? Because otherwise it sounds very out of the blue.

If you feel so bad about it, what's stopping you from writing something for him...now? Better late than never. Not that you need to because you're not obligated to make fanfic for anyone, but it doesn't have to be a huge piece of work. Maybe a drabble in a birthday card to surprise him. You can watch the series or read about it on...wiki or something idk what kind of resources you have available. If all else fails you can write for another series, related or no, for him. /shrugs
