Somebody's been spamming the submissions post with old secrets, apparently (for what actual purpose, I'm not sure). Just give me a heads up and I'll take the repeats down.

Okay, so I've just gotten into this show (got caught up in three days) and I'm confused by the hate I keep seeing. What's wrong with it?

[identity profile] seven-costanza.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
The jokes are forced and unfunny and the laugh track cues up waaaaaay too frequently, like to the point where I felt like the show was trying to shame me into laughing at its nonexistent jokes.

[identity profile] cold-river-blue.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
The jokes are forced and unfunny

Plus a lot of them are just wrong, especially when they are talking about the stuff these guys are supposed to be geniuses at.

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
If you're referring to the science jokes then it wouldn't make a difference to me anyways since I usually have no idea what they're talking about.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Some people find the jokes funny, some people don't. To the ones that do, it's great, and to the ones that don't, it's terrible and all us people who think it's great are stupid. It's really only the very last bit that I have a problem with.

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see. I've noticed the racist jokes and it does bother me a little but not enough to hate the show or stop watching. If that makes me stupid than I guess I'm okay with that.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay because clearly you like The Golden Girls
So you can't be stupid

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sophia agrees! =D

It's not funny and nerd stereotypes are so twenty thirty years ago

Seriously, everyone I was friends with in high school and myself -- we were all nerds and our lives didn't even come close to resembling that, and none of the nerds I've ever known were like that (doesn't matter what kind of nerd either -- fandom nerds, science nerds, whatever). I know it's just a tv show but the whole "shy nerdy dudes who don't know anything about getting laid or having a social life" thing is stupid and played out

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I'm not a huge comedy fan so I don't mind if it's not funny (which I actually think it often is). I also don't mind stereotypes because I feel it really works here. I don't really think of it as a show about a bunch of stereotypical nerds. I just think of it as a show about a bunch of interesting and smart people who are just trying to leave their mark on the world in their own little ways. So I guess it just comes down to perspective.

I hate the nerd stereotypes on different and competing levels. On the one hand, not all nerds are like that, and I don't like that almost all nerds are being portrayed that way. On the other hand, it's playing social difficulties and loneliness for laughs, and I hate that so much.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
For "shy nerdy dudes who don't know anything about getting laid or having a social life" they sure get laid a lot, and have a decent social life.

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I was always nerdy and awkward at school and I kind of love that there's a show that has made such people into the main characters and it's not always to emphasise how wrong and undesirable they are...though yeah there's elements of that.

But I'm from England and even though I got given hell at school for being a geek, maybe I didn't have it quite as bad compared to over in the States because I've noticed that over here most people love TBBT but when I speak about it to people from the States most of them hate it and bring up the portrayal of geeks/nerds as the reason.

It would be nice to have more female characters who have those interests who aren't as emotionally detached as Amy though. I also have a problem with the Penny/Leonard thing for many reasons.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate the show, but I do get tired of how often others try to use it to "understand" me. I live in a real life "nerd herd" and it's really nothing like TV portrays.

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, nothing ever is. You should've seen me twitch with the lesbian relationships on Queer as Folk. =/

I'm with you - i've been watching since the pilot and i think it's fun as hell. I know people like that, who obsess over comics and movies and games and Batman vs Superman.

Hell, i've had debates about movies with my friends like they have, and myself, my SO, and various friends/siblings/cousins used to play the hell out of D&D, Gamma World, and the superhero game whose name I can't remember.

Follow your bliss!

I really don't understand the hate, but whatever.

aw. I like it because the people in it remind me of me and my friends

also, Raj is super hot.

[identity profile] dragonladyk.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get the hate at all (even if Sheldon is only funny if I Do Not Think About It Too Deeply).

And I don't think Raj is a horrible stereotype: he's a brilliant physicist with a college-level vocabulary from a good, wealthy family, who genuinely loves his sister, is rubbish with women unless he's drunk, really could not care less about Hinduism, and can be both an amazing friend and an utter asshole. The average Indian character either A) grew up poor in with a broken family (if only by death) and speaks broken English and exists only as a morality play for nearby whites or B) is a wealthy, devout, spoiled Cassanova who treats women as chattel.

Raj's accent is prominent and the white people around him get weird about his race, but Raj is not a sterotype. IMO, anyway. ^^

The only thing I hate about it is that they still have Raj afraid of talking to women; talk about played out at this point.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
+1 to this. It was funny for a while, but now it's time to move on.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
The show is okay. I wish it was better, but the writers can phone it in at this point.

In terms of Raj, I'm Indian and he makes me weak at the knees. Kunal Nayyar is smokin'--and they've done everything they can to deter from that, hilariously: his hair is parted now (those wavy locks are just too hot to handle), his pants have gotten higher, and his hunch is especially pronounced. It's a waste, really.

I do think it's problematic how he still can't talk to women (how did he grow up to be a person anyway?) and his story lines are never long running (barring the selective mutism) and he's secondary to EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER on the show, especially since Howard's getting married.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I never understood why this show never appealed to me (though I don't hate it), until I realised it was written by the same guy who writes Two and a Half Men... Chuck Lorre? There's just something about his writing that's just not for me, I guess. And I often feel like the show is just trying to be played for laughs ALL the time and there's not really any heart.
