Somebody's been spamming the submissions post with old secrets, apparently (for what actual purpose, I'm not sure). Just give me a heads up and I'll take the repeats down.

wait, you actually played with your pogs? everyone I knew just collected them for the sake of having a whole bunch. we never knew what to do with them once we had the damn things.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
You make a tower with them, with all facing down, and then you all take turns throwing down one of your pogs to strike them down.

You get to keep the ones that you manage to flip face up. The game is over once all the pogs have been flipped.

The last two and three pogs are always the hardest to flip, so it can take a good chunk of the lunch break.

Depending on the rules agreed to beforehand, you can keep the pogs you flipped for real, or return them to their owner once the game is over. And if lunch break isn't over you get to do it all over again. :D

Yes, actually. Mine are still in my parents' attic.

I keep hoping they'll be worth something, but I don't think I was careful enough with them.

Now I wanna play……

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I don't think you need to worry about their condition hurting their value...

I worked at a summer school this summer, and the last week I brought my old Pog set and taught the kids how to play it.

They LOVED it. Exposing a new generation to the awesomeness.

(And, at the bottom of the box, I found some Felix the Cat pogs that Wendy's had given away with children's meals. I was like "Oh man, the 90s!"

One of the few times I ever found happiness at school. People didn't want to bully me so much if they could win shit from me. And I could connect with people through a game. I still have my collection in storage somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I still have my POGs. In their collectible binder. Just waiting for that market to come back.

[identity profile] amberthetired.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god. My dad totally sold mine in one of our garage sales without telling me. I was so heartbroken.

HEEEEE OMG NOSTALGIA-BRICK TO MY FACE

I had this bitchin' slammer with Spider-Man on it that I won EVERYBODY'S shit with. \m/

[identity profile] noapologiesx.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Last month my mom was cleaning out the attic and found a gigantic box full of my old pogs. omg. I don't even remember how to play the game anymore, but my brother and I were SO INTO IT.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
POGS!!!!! I used to play that at recess all the damn time. I had the big plastic pog tube to hold all my pogs, and I had like 4 or 5 slammers. DAMN I loved pogs. I don't have any anymore, though. ;__;

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I remember being vaguely horrified as that went from something you got for free on the tops of Mountain Dairy brand passion orange guava juice cartons to a form of gambling we had to ban from the schools. There was a point where people were charging like 2 bucks for a peice of printed cardboard. What a racket!

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Beanie Babies and Pokemon cards (and to an extent, tomagatchis) were all pretty bad, but yeah, pogs were seriously the stupidest fad I remember growing up with. My piano teacher was the one who tried to introduce me to it, and I just remember staring blankly at him. Why would I want what felt like reinforced cereal box circle cutouts?

[identity profile] thesaneminority.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
They got banned from our school because kids were throwing the slammers so hard they were hurting each other with them. I never heard about any POG gambling.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh if you win, you get to keep the other kid's pogs, and since some of them were "worth" a couple of bucks each, people were playing the game literally to add to their collection.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Come down to Mexico. Pogs will never ever die here.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I remember thinking the game was boring as shit when I was a kid but I liked collecting the POGs. I even had a POG-maker and I would make POGs of all my characters and stuff

also, while we're on the topic of pogs

Actually, when I went to the 99 cent store yesterday there was a thing that was pogs second version. Idk if it actually *was* pogs, I didn't buy it but if some place is selling something like that I'm guessing someone, somewhere is still wanting to buy them.

[identity profile] imouto.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't usually brag about this, but I was the winner of Knott's Berry Farm's 1994 SoCal Pog Championshop.

At least I think I won something... I was only like five at the time, so it's still pretty hazy.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Pogs never got big on the UK (at least not where I lived - I'd never heard of them back then) but this reminds me of the Pokemon craze in the 90s. Ahh good times.

[identity profile] melissasbrain.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I used to have a POG-maker when I was young... GOD I LOVED THAT THING.
