I feel like so many people who bad mouth it have either never been on the site at all and are only basing their idea of the site on second hand horror stories or went to like one board for 5 minutes.

Pretty much. You have to find the right board and know the culture, but it's not all terrible. Nearly any LJer would feel relatively comfortable in /cm/, for instance.

seriously, no one board represents the site as a whole.

I know that people there do a lot of shit that is just indefensible but that doesn't mean everybody is like that :/ generalising is never fun.

Technically, /a/ does. In that it was the first board. Though these days, it's obviously /b/ that gets all the attention. But you have the truth of it, each board should be treated as a seperate entity, and even that doesn't always work. Consider the brony phenomenon alone...

so many of the boards have absolutely nothing to with any of the others, so it shouldn't matter if it's the first board or the newest though. I suppose the belief that people have is in part due to the fact that they don't know anything about the other boards.

/b/ has been getting ~all the attention~ for as long as I can remember though, which is about 6 or 7 years. I don't know how it was perceived before that because I wasn't aware of the site until that point.

I love mlp but jesus I fucking hate bronies and I hate being associated with them, even if it's only tangentially.
