Notes:

Somebody's been spamming the submissions post with old secrets, apparently (for what actual purpose, I'm not sure). Just give me a heads up and I'll take the repeats down.

4chan is my savior too...

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
...but in a different way. I am always on /adv/ and /x/. I love to give advice and to help people. I generally care about improving things, if that would be the world or an individual. I have been through a lot in my life, and I am a bit older than the average Internet user that is into community sites these day.

4chan, thanks to being anonymous, offers me a place to completely be myself and to do what I enjoy doing: writing my opinions and thoughts on subject matters, AND helping people out.

I have found I cannot do that under a name. I would love to be the shoulder to cry on for people on my username sites, but it fails every time I try to be nice to someone, or to offer my advice.

Why? It is growing ever popular to be an asshole on the Internet (outside of 4chan). People are latching their assholery onto the usernames, because the more of a jerk you are to someone and the more like-minded you are (not having an opinion that differs from the mainstream), the cooler you.

I have legitimately cared about helping a lot of people, but 90% of the time that I have done so, some person would barge their way in (either in the conversation itself, or on my own page comments/lj) thinking they are all badass for "calling me out" on being apparently fake.

I've heard, "lol you are so fake" more times than I can count, because I have tried to offer people my help and told them they didn't have to censor themselves around me.

These bystanders would then proceed with the whole "spechual snowflake" BS that is such a fad to throw at people, because we had opinions and I talked to people about their demons such as being molested or abused.

It was simply horrible, and it got me harassed so much since people viewed me as a white knight.

So 4chan is the only place where I can be myself and feel happy by making other people feel happy. As I said before, this is thanks to being anonymous, AND more importantly, that the threads move rather fast...so nothing is permanent for too long.

This is in contrast to say, an LJ community where you can be anonymous as well. The threads/comments are permanent (unless a mod wants to delete them or the group allows the user to delete them), so it offers time for people to troll/attack forever.

I've even had people in FS here dissect a thread I was actively trying to help someone in, only for some obsessive anti-fan of mine to name drop and point out to everyone that it was /me/ and that "___is just being a fake attention whore again"...despite that I was under anonymous.

Anyway, it was after that kind of stuff that I just moved to /adv/ and /x/ to offer my insight.

Yeah yeah, inb4 "cool story bro".

Hey, fellow /x/phile. I agree with your comment.

That sucks. ._. I'm glad you found a good place to offer advice.
