Because the chauffeur is common and poor. Mary is turning down people in the same/similar class to her.

Yeah but given her circumstances I'd say the offense is about of the same gravity as Sybil wanting to marry someone below her station. Plus she's all "rebel rebel rebel" but apparently "not that much!" which annoys the fuck out of me.

Seeing as Mary was rendered kind of ruined for all intents and purposes I think it is. But obviously I could be wrong too I haven't studied that period all that much.

The Pamuk thing? It's not public knowledge though and he was similar class-wise. It is an interesting period, there's a book out at the moment about the actual place it's filmed and the history about the family there.

Yeah but every time it's mentioned I feel like more people know about it than the previous time it was mentioned! :P Is it just me? Still, you know, I always like a little rebellion. But for some reason instead of becoming more interesting as she decided to do something with her life, become a nurse and actually give Branson the time of day, Sybil became boring. I don't know how that worked out, but it did.

I might read more about it, all I know is that insane law that women can't inherit shit, which obviously I think is ridiculous. I know more about medieval times and from the 1920s onwards than late 19th early 20th century for some reason.

Yeah, I was hoping Sybil would get a job and/or be more politically active. IDK, this season just seems to be all about 'everyone must be in love or get married to be happy' etc.

I actually thought she was going to be a suffragette and I was excited, I would've liked to see more about that movement and the history of the women's right to vote too. But noooo, we got stuck with the war (understandably, I suppose) and then, like you said, it's "marriage is the most important thing in the world" time.
