really people? Smoking outside hospital doors?

For a lot of smokers, smoking is a way to calm down and feel normal. For non-smokers, it seems to always carry a connotation of OMGCANCER, but that's not what I, at least, think about when I light up. If you are used to it, smoking can function as a way to calm your nerves, settle your stomach, a reason to step away from something that's bothering you, or just a way to get rid of a headache. Hospitals can be really, really stressful places, so outside hospital doors isn't that unusual a place to want to smoke.

The first time I ever smoked in front of my mom was outside a hospital door, following the death of a relative.

Anywho, about 60% of the doctors/nurses/med students I know smoke anyway, so I've always been surprised when hospitals don't allow smoking anywhere on the campus.

I totally understand that they're not smoking to give themselves cancer, and that hospitals can be stressful places, it's just frustrating when a) there are signs, and b) you're doing it right outside the ER entrance doors so that sick people/staff are forced to walk through clouds of smoke to get into the building.

Like I said, as someone who's asthmatic and allergic, my work is one place I would consider a safe 'smoke free' environment, so it's frustrating when it's not. :/ In general I don't have a problem with people who smoke in public, though door hoverers anywhere are a bit annoying for the same above reasons, as I don't expect people to lock themselves into a bubble to smoke, that would be ridiculous. XD

I'm surprised. Not that people in health care smoke, after all, we're just as prone to vices as anyone else. Even if healthy people smoke, smoking around people with already compromised immune systems/children/babies seems like a better reason to ban smoking than in bars/etc.

Oh, I didn't mean smoking *inside* the hospital. I just meant, I'm surprised that there isn't anyplace on grounds where people are allowed to smoke, since so many of the people I know who work in hospitals would use such a place. I can't imagine why there would be any infants or people with compromised immune systems in an outdoor smoking area (unless of course the latter were patients who also smoked).

*facedesk*

Sorry... off sick and clearly not braining properly. XD That makes a lot more sense. Actually I am surprised we don't have a designated smoking area, since it'd be easier to direct people there than try to get them to not smoke period on the property. :/

It's pretty fucked up to smoke right by the doors of a hospital, though. Ideally there would be marked smoking areas somewhere a little way away, so smokers could smoke without other people having to walk by them.

I do think it's ridiculous when hospitals don't allow smoking anywhere on the premises, though, for all the reasons you say. Here (UK) that's the law, but people ignore it.
