[Harry Potter]

It's okay, OP. Popularity =/= quality.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
while I think there is plenty of very good H/D still to be read, I agree with nonny's assessment of the author. Cookie cutter stories with no real passion do nothing for me. :/

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, OP, but I don't agree at all. I love Lomonaaeren's fics. Not all of them, but quite a lot. My only issue with her fics is that she (usually) writes the same Harry and Draco all the time, and they usually have the same relationship dynamic. And that's not bad or anything...it just means I need a bit of a break in between her fics.

I also don't think she's a bad writer at all. She's pretty good, actually. A lot better than plenty of other writers in the fandom. Some of her fics do seem rushed, though (not all!), but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that she writes so many fics at one time (one of my friends who used to beta-read for her once told me it was 'cause she needed to write more than one thing to stay interested). I think some of her fics tend to be a bit underdeveloped because of that, as well. Whatever works for her, I guess, but I'd really prefer if she settled for writing fewer fics at once.

Anyway, I still like her a lot. And I really have no issue with fandom cliches. I'm one of those people who enjoys them. :)

Seriously though, OP. There are plenty of H/D shippers who aren't fond of Lomonaaeren, either. No worries.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
You certainly don't have to agree with me. And I never said I thought she was a bad!fic writer. I actually made sure to include that I don't think she's a bad writer. I don't want it to seem like I'm trying to tear her down, because she does do a lot of writing, contribute to the fandom, and it's just an opinion. She is talented, but I think she also doesn't take enough time on her writing. But you and anyone else are perfectly entitled to love her writing.

It's just something that's really frustrating, you know? I agree she writes the same Harry and the same Draco, and often times I don't even recognize the characters as themselves. I want something different. And I kind of assumed the reason for the rushed-ness of the stories was because of how much she writes at once, which also might be why there's so much overlap with the way she writes them.

I know there are more fics out there, but it's just one of those things where I tend to look around for a long while and not find something to my taste. Half of it is luck. Hopefully, I can find something new to read and spark my interest again.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose the reason why I'm not overly bothered with her H & D is 'cause I don't mind OOCness when I feel it's done well. She has a kind of H/D she likes and she sticks with it. It would be really nice if she branched out a bit, though. It's because she does that that her fics tend to, as you said, overlap. They all have the same feel, and if I'm not careful I'd completely end up mistaking one fic for another as soon as I'm finished with 'it (it's happened, too).

I don't like all of her fics, but there are quite a lot that I just adore for various reasons. Anyway~

I think a lot of it has to do with luck, as you say, but also with the mindset. H/D is my main fandom, but there are times when I drift away-- even for long periods of time-- because of the unoriginality and lack of new, riveting fics. In the time when I'm away I'd try to read a few H/D fics and just be totally uninterested. And then I'd find a good fic a few weeks/months later that I just love, and a whole bunch of other good!fic would seem to follow, and just like that the problem is solved. Funny thing is, I'd try re-reading the same fic I abandoned earlier and actually like it. =/ It's probably not the same thing, though.

Maybe you should just not rush it. I don't think you'll get far by forcing yourself. It'll happen, I'm sure.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I usually like her stories and she can be very original sometimes with spells, potions, rituals... I love that.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, the magic! Yes, she writes magic very, very well! I can always spot one of her fics a mile away simply because of that. There are few authors who write magic the same way she does. It's lovely.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
While I agree with most of your points about that particular author's writing (ok, all of them, gave up on reading those fics ages ago for same and many more reasons), I disagree that there is nothing new and exciting to read.
There are many (like whoa) other more talented (less hacky if you will) writers in the fandom. Frayach comes to mind, Saras_girl... Fests and such happen really frequently (like http://hd-canon-fest.livejournal.com) and there're lots and lots of different H/D fics to read for different tastes.

Don't base your opinion on just one author is all I'm saying.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that I don't know about all the other things in the fandom. I still watch plenty of communities, it's more like every time I try I can't find something new or I just constantly see her stuff.

I guess it's more like, I feel disheartened and uninterested, but at the same time, I miss it a lot. I should look into the things you said when I've got some time on my hands. Thank you for the link and the names. I appreciate it. It's also nice to hear that I'm not the only one who doesn't find her stories that compelling.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] hd_canon_fest was a major success. There were just so many amazing fics. I'm so sad it's over.

I haven't started reading anything from the H/D Big Bang, but the fics over there look really promising, as well.

not OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
For me H/D Big Bang was pretty much a disappointment, most of the good writers dropped out and only the relatively "newbies" stayed...
But yeah, hd_canon_fest really brought some exceptional fics (e.x. Choices of the Heart, Protegus, Stars as Bright Spots Only).
And there's hd_holidays coming up soon which should be also full of quality fics.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I have the same problem with pretty much the entire corner of Hermione-based HP fandom. Granger Enchanted, I am so looking at you right now.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I can't bring myself to read their fics. I've honestly tried, but the Draco, Harry and Snape they write simply don't feel like the canon characters, not even taking into account the aging up involved. It feels like I'm reading original fiction "inspired" by Harry Potter, not Harry Potter.

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
no idea who this particular author is, but man, Harry/Draco is one of those pairings I'd totally be interested in if I wasn't always giving chances to fics where before long one or both of them really feels like some generic trope collection rather than Harry or Draco. :/

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
This is very true. Often times, they do end up becoming a arch types that lack characterization (which I feel this author does, a lot), and the plots are the same cookie-cutter plots just to get them together so they can make with the sexing up.

I like Harry/Draco because it's nitty-gritty, but also I think they could teach each other a lot. If I still had the drive, the interest and passion, I'd be all over exploring them in fics, but I'm just so listless about it but also so nostalgic.

Re: OP

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
This made me do a double-take. Just which of her fics have you tried reading? 'Cause not all of them are like that. Some, but most of them aren't. D=

For a moment I thought you were talking about one of those authors like [livejournal.com profile] leo_draconis (she's a nice woman, but I don't like her fic at all, though fandom pretty much worships her) and not Lomonaaeren at all.

[identity profile] spacefragments.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
man, i always started out reading her fics because her ideas sounded AWESOME from the summaries and the very first chapters, but they always got so boring towards the middle that i had to quit reading. :(

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I do the same thing. Or I did. I've known for ages I don't like her writing, not just the characterization and progression of the plot, but I just don't like her style all the time. But sometimes, man, I think "I'm gonna give this a shot" and I end up not liking it, being annoyed or bored, and skimming through to see if any of my predictions are right.

I've given up entirely on trying with her stuff though. Which somehow led to me giving up on the fandom in general? I do not know how that happened. :(

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. Pretty much getting disenchanted by the whole ship even though I used to be a total H/D addict for years :/
I feel like the BNFs left fandom or changed ships (mainly to Merlin/Arthur or Arthur/Eames or Jared/Jensen) and even the few who stayed don't bother updating their WIPs.
The drop-out rates are kind of horrendous at all HP fests as far as I can see...
About Lomonaaeren... I used to follow her journal, but every time I got excited about her new fic, a few chapters in I lost interest due to her over-plotting and her Draco being so analytical and because her stories were just too mechanical, there was no flow, lot of internal monologue, H/D(/S) behaving in completely OOC ways. I really think she has a knack for good plot and good ideas, but her execution leaves a lot to be desired... I also dislike how she keeps bashing Ginny, Dumbledore or Ron.

BUT I don't agree that there is no quality fic any longer in H/D fandom. As someone further up said, check out hd_canon_fest, frayach, saras-girl, rurounihime, femmequixotic, some of oldenuf2nb 's older stuff is good (although you have to get used to her style). hd_holidays is in a month, there was also a draco big bang (bigbangdraco.livejournal.com/) with one or two good stories.
I'm not saying there's a lot of new, quality fic, but you can find if you look hard enough :)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? We should be friends! I've been in H/D practically since forever and the sense of quality and wonder has seriously gone down these past years I feel. It's the same authors writing the same old stuff. There are some amazing things out there. Best on the web I'm sure but it just seems stagnant compared to other fandoms. Have you noticed the lack of AU's, very vanilla sex and just basically.. it seems like all the cliches have been done. No kinkmeme no new ideas and just recycle..

That's not to say I don't love the fandom with every inch of my heart because H/D for the longest time was my OTP but there's much better exciting things out there. I still follow the Prophet and view fests but it's just not as engaging.

I suggest XMFC and Inception, that stuff will blow you out of the water!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This could be my secret! I have tried that author's fics several times, but I cannot stand them. I have one foot out of the door of the H/D fandom, but there is one fic keeping me there. If you haven't read it yet, I HIGHLY suggest [livejournal.com profile] saras_girl 's Turn. It's amaaaazing!
