It doesn't piss me off, but I don't get it either. Bro was harsh on Dave, but it doesn't look like he ever hurt him. He trained him from a ridiculously young age, but we never saw Dave being abused or belittled or in any way hurt.

At most you could argue that he traumatized with the sick puppet fetish thing, but besides his obsession with being cool and ironic, Dave appeared to be fine.

While I don't think Bro actually abused Dave (don't mind reading it in fic though) I can kind of see where they got it. Bro did throw him down a flight of stairs. And bury him in sex toys. And throw him across the roof as a baby. Not to mention using Lil Cal, aka god of puppet nightmares, to feed him.

I think Bro may have been a shitty 'father'. I think he may have made some mistakes, and maybe every now and then they went with out food fo0r a day or two when shit got tough. But I can't ever see Bro intentionally causing Dave harm to cause him harm. Would he be rough during training? Probably. It's training. But I can't see him actually hurting Dave and not trying to patch him up after.

Bro always struck me as that 'Awkward teen-aged father' sort of guy. Unsure of what to do, distant, and weird but still loving his little 'brother'.

Apparently the trauma of losing their home world and having their guardians die isn't traumatic enough, so they have add a "rape/abuse for drama" plot in order to reach what they think is depth. With Dave especially, because breaking the cool kid is always fandom's biggest thrill.

Yeah, I'm not sure how you can be so vehemently against this headcanon on canonical grounds at least. Yes, Bro most likely loved Dave (he slept on a futon in the living room while Dave got the only bedroom, for example) but he also gave him a Spartan childhood that in the real world would get him a visit from social services sharpish.
