ikr? And it's kind of funny, because I remember a couple of other secrets posted about characters who people kept calling African American but were really something totally different.

There are a lot of things in between "caucasian" and "african american", guys. (and on a somewhat related note, I've seen a lot of black characters called "african american" when they weren't even american, which is also dumb)

It is dumb, but it's an unfortunate aspect of political correctness in America. It's to the point that using the word "black" can be considered an insult, so many whites are taught to use "African-American" to avoid this. Hence, non-African-Americans getting called African-American. Considering Caucasian is used in the same manner, American names for racial categories are seriously messed up.

Kind of reminds me of my first time participating in a forum.

English is not my first language and this discussion thread was about Non White characters in a British work of fiction. This guy uses the word black to refer to one character and everyone jumps in to tell him off. So, I took good note not to use the word again and replace it with African American.

A while later in the same goddamn thread, I say "I always thought so and so was African American, even if it's not explicit in the book". Cue everyone telling me off for using African American and "How ignorant are you really?".

I don't know, you tell me.

I've seen newspapers refer to Nelson Mandela as an african-american, it made me laugh.
