Am I the only one confused by the neckbeard mysoginist statement? If there's some context I'm missing, would someone do me a favor and fill me in?

Not OP but I think it's just that the two often overlap. The Common Neckbeard has a habit of saying things like "women won't recognize what a nice guy I am and they all put me in the friend zone, they're such stupid bitches and whores".

I still don't understand what that has to do with hating Shinji. Further input is needed.

Um, this is just a guess, and it probably is wrong, but...

Well, (and it's been a long time since I watched NGE, so I'm sorry about that), but couldn't Shinji's attitude be seen as "Unmanly" in a way? And if he's "Unmanly" then ~obviously~ he's acting like a woman, and that's Bad, thus being mysoginist by virtue of the fact that Shinji's being emo and stuff is "acting like a woman" and the fact that this is Bad.

But... I'm (hopefully/probably) wrong. ^^;

well, that makes more sense. I wish the OP would've clarified what they meant by that, though. The weird made-up quote they used only makes me more confused.

A lot of Eva viewers hate Shinji because he doesn't act like how they want to think they would act - ignore their issues, overcome them through strong will, and enjoy piloting a huge mecha because it's a science fiction fantasy. But Shinji is actually a far more realistic portrayal of how a young teenager would react to having a hard childhood and being forced into military service in middle school. So he gets a lot of hate for not being a fantasy escapist character, and a lot of people (myself included) think it's silly to call a character "weak" and "annoying" in order to uphold the fantasy that (general) you would be different and better than that. It's more about the attitude toward reasonable human weakness than Shinji alone. That sadly common attitude of admiration toward exaggerated bravery and masculinity is what the OP is referencing.

Honestly I thought Shinji was the most realistic person in the main cast.
