I'm a history major, and I tell people who won't stop asking me what I'm going to work as that I'm studying the history of financial systems and how they work so that I can learn how to manipulate everything to my advantage and then take over the world and use my knowledge of systems and patterns of behaviour that countries and their leaders exhibit to ensure that no one will dare to threaten my rule.

It's usually worth the looks on their faces.

Though to be honest I don't actually have any world ruling aspirations. If I can get a quiet job that lets me spend all day looking through archives I'll be quite happy.

You'll need to go to grad school to do that, bb.

Master of Library Science will let you do that! I have several friends with that degree who spend all day puttering around arranging dusty manuscripts. But, as anon above said, you'd better be ready for grad school if you're serious about archiving or research.

I may need to adopt this response.

I'm so sick of people telling me to become a teacher because I'm majoring in history. I don't want to teach your ungrateful little maggots for minimal pay, people. I really, really don't.

Haha, tell me about it. I've lost count of the number of times someone has been all 'oh, you're a history major? does this mean you want to teach?' at me.

I wouldn't actually mind too much, I think, it's just... I'm a little tired of people assuming that it's an automatic thing. And between telling them 'uh, not really' and then having to explain why or just saying that I'm planning on using my history powers to take over the world, I by far prefer the second.

The worst part about it for me is that I actually would make a good teacher. I just can't stand children, be they pre-school or college-age, for extended periods of time. I wouldn't be able to shake it. It seems to be the go-to profession for history people, though, which I guess is why it's thrown at us all the time. :/

Taking over the world is a much better alternative. Go for it!

er, I never really thought of college aged people as children...

Most of the ones I deal with on a daily basis act like children trying to be adults. I know because I'm of the same mindset a lot of the time, which is really depressing when I think about it. However, when we have to be instructed not to put lab equipment in one another's ears because some guy ruptured his friend's eardrum pulling that kind of crap a few years ago, yeah, I'd say there's an air of immaturity around.

Also, a lot of the undergrads attending my university seem really young. Like, will only just be able to legally drink before graduation young.

Huh? If you go to a 4 year university after you graduate high school (in the US, at least), you should just be able to drink in your final year. Maybe part of the third year if you have an early birthday. Maybe that's why everyone seems that age - it is the traditional age for attending university?

A lot of the kids I know are coming in as freshman at 17, so I guess the math works out for them to be legally drinking during their fourth year. I don't know.

All I know is that there is a shit ton of underage binge drinking at my university done by all of these baby-faced kids who look more like high school freshmen than college freshmen, and it's unsettling. I don't know how old they actually are, but they look young and act young, so I assume they're, well, young.

It depends on the person. Some people haven't truly matured much at that age.

I'm not sure how much of a go-to profession it is. Most of the other history majors and I commiserate over the fact that none of us are really all too interested in being teachers- at least, not any more interested in being teachers than the average person would be. Certainly, there are a few of us who are looking into it, but it's hardly a default.

Unfortunately, people keep assuming it is, which doesn't do anything for its appeal.

The other thing I like to reply with is that if I did become a history teacher, I'd aim to be the same sort as Vo Nguyen Giap was. And after explaining to them what Giap was capable of doing...

My university has a specific track for history majors going into primary and secondary education. Nothing like it is available through any other major. Most of the history majors I know aren't particularly interested in teaching either, but the career information given to us lists teaching (post secondary for the track I'm on) as the second item under 'historian' when naming potential career options. It's almost like they expect to make teachers out of us, so I see why people get the idea that history is only useful for teaching.

Aww. Hopefully one day you'll find mature students to teach, maybe one on one. I promise we exist! :D

I hated hearing this when I was in college too, but now that I'm through with my degree, I'm realizing that there really are very few other options for us history majors unless we want to return to school. And graduate school is looking more and more like a total ripoff every day (so I'm $15,000 in debt and you want me double the debt I have now for a remote chance that I might have some sort of job when I get done? NO THANKS)

Honestly I'm thinking of going to a community college and dropping $4000 on paralegal certification. I don't have any interest in it but it seems like a relatively small amount of money to make myself even a bit more hireable

Of course my ~DREAM~ was to get my Master's in Library/Information Science and become a librarian but that is ... just... not going to happen

I highly doubt I'm going to graduate school. I barely have enough money to get my undergraduate education as it is, and I really don't want to get a teaching license after I graduate. I know a good program that's reasonably timely and priced, but I can't. I would much rather wait tables for the rest of my life than teach kids.

I'm sorry to hear about the librarian thing. :( Graduate school is so ridiculously expensive, and even if you do get a Master's or PhD, there's no guarantee of getting hired anyway. I hope things work out for you.

yeah. My dream was to take my history degree, get a phd, and then get a nice job as a college professor of the variety who spends most of their time doing research. That's never gonna happen. Thanks, economy!

I feel you. I study theology, and so everyone asks if I'm going to teach Religious Education. The infuriating thing is that this is only a question for women studying theology. Men get asked if they're going to be religious leaders.

So basically, screw them all, I'm going to be a Rabbi. :)
