Agreed on all points. But we are going to need something like Starfleet Academy at some point. Space is our future. If we don't head out there at some point we'll end up destroying ourselves. And it's better if we start now. I wasn't thinking that OP would build a Star Trek level Starfleet Academy equivalent. Like you said, it would take more than a generation. More than likely several. But we have to start some where and an establishment that is connected with a space program, private or public, with government approval is the best place to start. Which can be done. No, not by an average person but who's to say OP is average? And who's to say they'd have to do it alone? I wouldn't be surprised if many people would jump at the chance to help an idea like this along. Not in this environment of course but OP's probably not ready to hit the ground running just yet. He or she would need years of education and networking first and by they time they are ready maybe the environment will be in a place where it's possible. The point isn't to do it right this second, is to have a goal to work towards, one worth the effort and that OP enjoys.
