The term African American (just like Asian American - which is bad for many other reasons) is offensive even when referring to the race of actual Americans of African descend, if you don't also call all white people "English-American", "German-American", etc. It's black, tyvm.
"African-American" sounds like it was invented by terrified white people.

I Googled so I'd have link. Wiki is the fasted one, but there are better ones.

"In the 1980s the term African American was advanced on the model of, for example, German-American or Irish-American to give descendents of American slaves and other American blacks who lived through the slavery-era a heritage and a cultural base.[148] The term was popularized in black communities around the country via word of mouth and ultimately received mainstream use after Jesse Jackson publicly used the term in front of a national audience. Subsequently, major media outlets adopted its use.[148]"

You're obviously not American, the nationality from which the term is derived. Alternatively, you're goddamn ignorant. In the United States, the most politically correct term for blacks is "African-American" and refers almost exclusively to blacks as opposed to white Africans (who would be termed Caucasian) or North Africans (who would be considered of Middle Eastern descent). The term was largely supported by the former slave community as a way to honor their heritage, something they had been denied previously. The term "African" was used because slavery, the means to acquire slaves, intermarriage, and poor birth records made it virtually impossible to trace blacks to any particular tribe or people in Africa; instead, the name would represent all of Africa.

I don't think English-American was ever used since the original colonists of the United States were mostly English, but terms such as Irish-American and German-American were used extensively until several lawsuits made it legal for non-Anglo-Saxon citizens to be considered "white". It is still considered mildly appropriate to call someone predominantly of one non-American heritage by that moniker (Chinese, Irish, Indian, Italian, etc.). Nowadays, the -American is usually left off, except in the case of African-American.
