Americans have been conditioned to refer to anyone with darker skin who is not Hispanic, Asian or from Jersey Shore as African American in order to avoid the PC police. It's annoying as hell, yeah, but I give 'em a break. They are just trying to avoid being called out as racist/insensitive/whatever.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
but considering it is made explicitly clear in the actual game that she is neither african or american, there is no excuse to mistake her for an african american.

Not all Americans, but nice generalisation. And now it's considered more PC to say "black" or "person of color", because "African American" is offensive.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I find being called a P.O.C extremely offensive and I don't know why some people still use it to try and be PC or general. Every time I hear someone call someone else that I cringe. Thanks for completely disregarding cultural heritage just for the convenience of lumping everyone together who isn't like you.

[identity profile] jedi-pineapple.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I actually agree with "person of colour" being offensive, which is why I personally don't use it. I fucking hate the term, but most people I meet prefer it. I've never met someone who prefers African American.

I do often wonder why so many white people use POC. White people are like a pink color, and go bright red a lot. Surely they should be a POC as well?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-06 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

The other day I heard someone refer to South Americans as People Of Color and I just wanted to slap them. There is more variety of skin tones over here, and some of them are not what most people in the United States believe is Caucasian, but god dammit we are more than a skin tone.

[identity profile] seven-costanza.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Person of color" is also offensive. It's like THIS fucking close to calling someone "colored". And fuck, what determines a "color"? Is peach not a color anymore?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
this x100. it also implies that everyone who is "of color" can be lumped into one large homogenous group of people who aren't white. screw race, culture, history, or skin color. if you aren't white, you're all just the same "of color" people.

[identity profile] jedi-pineapple.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Person of color is the only term that actually makes me feel lesser, short of an insult or a slur. It's like, "oh, you're not white, you can be lumped in with the other non-whites." To me the PoC term just drives the point home that 'White' is at the top and the rest are a different category.

I hate it so.

As a person of mixed race, I prefer POC/WOC. I'm not black enough to be black, I'm not white enough to be white, and my parents identify as native and afro-latino respectively- even though my mom is mostly Irish and my dad is half Haitian half Belgian/Austrian Jew.

I was told I was only allowed to be the 'descendent of a POC' and my white mum disqualified me. I doesn't matter since I don't like the term anyways, but I just thought it was interesting that a mixed person was using it.

[identity profile] ameonna.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. That's bullshit. There are few things that irritate me more than being informed what color I am/should identify as by people who aren't me and don't know my life experiences.

[identity profile] followthemoth.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they were ignorant people. Being informed of what I'm supposed identify is probably my biggest pet peeve too.

On a more positive note, it was nice to here another mixed person's take on the "POC" term; thank you for sharing.

I know how you feel. As a Dominican-American it becomes a chore to try and label myself on forms when they ask if I identify myself as either a "white Hispanic" or "Black Hispanic". Dominicans are usually considered Black-Hispanic's so I choose that, even though I have very fair skin.

heh jersey shore
