Yeah, I imagine that with the exception of linguists for translating and decoding purposes, this would very much be true. There's also the diplomatic and combat aspects of dealing with other civilizations that must be learned in addition to whatever specialty you might happen to have due to the whole military thing.
And for the ground personnel (people stuck on earth or space stations), I assume it would be research-oriented (in the sciences: biology, geology and botany in particular), which, if the OP is having trouble figuring out what they want to do, wouldn't be ideal because that would be highly specialized, much like academia.
