His English voice actor was male

His male voice actor is a very bombastic, kind of aggressive person though. I wouldn't go as far as to say he's a misogynistic neckbeard or anything, but he does fit into the category of not liking Shinji because he thinks he's a giant coward who should just man up and get over it. So it's not so surprising he had a hard time differentiating between Shinji disliking himself and him disliking Shinji. I haven't met the Japanese VA so I can't say for sure, but I do get the impression she had more sympathy for the character.

From the commentary on the dvd, I would say it wasn't only Spike Spencer that thought Shinji was wimpy and annoying. Rei's and Kaji's(I think) voice actor were saying so as well. Maybe it's mostly westerners that view Shinji as a wuss?

But it was kinda hard to sympathize with Shinji in EoE anyway, at least before Rei went all triptastic apocalypse on him.
