IA with Childings... I think it's a version of the Seinfeld Is Unfunny (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny) trope (tvtropes alert), where we see Shinji now as the "Japanese antihero archetype", but he wasn't when NGE was first created, especially when compared to other Mecha Anime of the time. Nowadays we see more of them, but then, they didn't really exist. :/

Mecha anime has nothing to do with it, there has always been an antihero type.

In Shinji's defense, usually the antihero is actually an antiheroine, but I'll leave aside the jokes about femininity. I have no time to go into it as I have a midterm tomorrow, but it did exist before NGE.

But how often prior to NGE were they the protaginist? I mean that sincerely, I haven't watched a ton of pre-NGE Mecha anime. :3

I'll have to agree to disagree with you then, as I think there is a def. difference between the "function" of an anti-heroine, and the "function" of Shinji as a protaginist and antihero. :D
