Don't you learn that like, in school ? I'm seriously asking, it's not ironic.

If they go to school in America?

Most liekly not. And I say this as an American. I thought it was all just "natives/Native Americans" and it wasn't until well into late high school or after when it was like "oh aboriginals is a word? And it's not Eskimos? What?"

/shrug

It was just how I was raised. I mean, obv. I educated myself later, but the majority of American teaching doesn't teach shit about Australia or anything around there.

Really? We totally learned about Aboriginals in my school system when we were in middle school.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's... not necessarily a required part of any curriculum I was exposed to, I don't think... but it makes things even more complicated when every state manages its own educational systems, at least to some degree, and I grew up moving from state to state. So even if it was covered in every school system I attended, it might have been in different grades, and I may have very easily overlooked it.

Basically: I didn't learn about Aborigines. But I did spend half a year learning the history of the Alamo. Half. A. Year. I wish I was exaggerating. My education was..... weak.

I live in Texas and we were taught the same fucking Texas History every single fucking year until 8th grade, no joke. Remember the Alamo? I couldn't forget it even if I wanted to, it's been tattooed onto my subconscious.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I only had one year of that shit... but even then I knew it was a joke. I remember having a notebook with black paper pages for gel pens better than I remember the alamo.

... no... I can still see maps of the thing... I'll give them that. But god, Texas, you are not your own country anymore. Get over yourselves and teach kids some USEFUL history, will you? D:

I was homeschooled. I spent half a year bullshitting about Bush peeing gold bricks covered in paintings of crying eagles and American flags. Though, admittedly, that was only when I wasn't writing essays about how ~God's power is what holds atoms together~. Can't even make that shit up, it was in my chemistry course. HAO IS SCIENCE FORMED?????

AMERICA FUCK YEAH (though for the record, my mom saw the light and switched me to a secular curriculum after that year THANK GOD)
