(Still catching up on supernatural at the moment).

Hm. Wasn't aware of this.

Personally, along with memory removal/warping love potions/manipulation are one of those things in fiction which can skeeve me the hell out if they're not pointed out as (at the very least) creepy/questionable. Granted, it'd be a lot worse if say one person uses such tactics to win another person and it was presented as okay. Then I'd hit the roof.

It's kind of one of the creepy/ interesting things in Harry Potter too. It disturbs me but it's interesting. I mean Moldy-Shorts father was pretty much given drugs and had sex with a woman he probably wouldn't have (rape?) producing Voldy himself. And HARRY gets sent the same thing sent in spiked cakes by a fangirl in his own house in book 6 though Ron ate them. Yet it's kind of played for laughs half the time (only made dramatic when Ron is almost poisoned after being given an antidote), or Voldy's mother is set up as a tragic figure in some ways. Weird. And disturbing.

(So yeah- also kind of fishing for dark HP fic here which actually presents love potions as horribly disturbing things. In a Supernatural thread. Sorry guys.)

well, in the Voldemort example at least it was presented as being very much not okay. In fact, that was the reason why Voldemort grew up being unable to even comprehend love and affection and is part of why he turned out to be such a psycho (way to go, Voldemort's mom!).

Rowling elaborated that him being conceived from a love potion was "a symbolic way of showing that he came from a loveless union – but of course, everything would have changed if Merope had survived and raised him herself and loved him. The enchantment under which Tom Riddle fathered Voldemort is important because it shows coercion, and there can’t be many more prejudicial ways to enter the world than as the result of such a union"."

I totally agree that love potions in fiction tend to be really troubling. And the fact that Rowling acknowledges how wrong it was for Voldemort's mother to use a potion to make a dude her love slave but then also writes about love potions for laughs is really weird. I mean, it was written that tons and tons of girls bought Fred and George's date rape potions so doesn't that mean some of them might be making more potential Voldemorts?
