Thinking about it, the art is probably one big reason why there's so many fangirls for the series. Hell, I know Hikaru no Go wouldn't have nearly as many readers if the art had been ugly.
Where there are pretty boys, dumb yaoi girls will follow.

I agree not all are dumb...seeing as I'm a yaoi fangirl and like to think I'm intelligent. (Actually, most of the HikaGo fandom I've encountered has been great. It's DN that has lots of weird fangirls.)

I'm guilty of looking into series just for the art, but like you I don't become a big fan unless the story is compelling. That doesn't change how people are attracted to "pretty" things and great stories with ugly art get less attention, or how people will be so distracted by the "pretty shiny bishies" they lose sight of the story.
