No shame, anon, no shame. Niles was a wonderfully rounded character - sure he had his faults but the good things about him were just amazing. He's totally in my top 5.

LOL, I'm sure you've got plenty of company. The thing about Niles was that no matter how many faults he had, he was never actually annoying or distasteful. He never gave off a vibe that made me think "go away, I can't take you anymore." He was endearing and hilarious and wonderful at his best, and never dipped below moderately bearable at his worst. I never got the feeling that I'd ever get *sick* of him, no matter how much I rolled my eyes and shook my head and groaned at his various neuroses.

For contrast: I absolutely love-love-loved Frasier too, but he sometimes got on my nerves so much I wanted him to either get the crap beaten out of him or to just get off the screen and stop existing for a moment. I'm pretty sure Frasier would be exhausting to live with and talk to and deal with no matter who you were because he's just so fucking tangled-up and intense and full to bursting with Frasier-ness. With Niles, you would just need to be able to deal with a lot of bickering, and have a very tolerant sense of humor, in order to deal with all the crazy shit he buries himself in through his own insanity.

Also, I'd take a neurotic sarcastic snob with that kind of wild zest for life in a heartbeat over a pleasant laid-back guy who was just nice and sane and dull all time.

I will never look at David Hyde Pierce in the same way now I've seen the ad for The Perfect Host. He creeped me the hell out. I used to love Niles too. *sigh*

I've actually heard this sentiment expressed elsewhere...that the perfect host guy (what's his name again? His initials were W.W., I think) was incapable of being unseen. Now I'm afraid to see that movie -- is he really that disturbing?

On the other hand, if it's true, it means he's a *really* good actor...
