I feel like "I will judge you" is a really strong term, but I will roll my eyes a little. For the most part, I try not to nitpick when I'm reading fanfic, but they spend so much time in the Impala (it's basically the third main character of the show) that this seems like a pretty glaring error. It's like a Buffy fanfic describing the Magic Box as a bookstore. Yeah, Giles worked as a librarian and there are books in the Magic Box, but you have to be pretty unfocused to think it's an actual bookstore and not a magic shop.

[identity profile] emchelle.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC. It's one of those little continuity errors that momentarily jars me right out of the story.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, exactly. When you get down to it, the Impala was the only reoccuring location in the show for a long time, and even now more scenes are set in the car's interior than anywhere else. (Yeah, Bobby's place has become a reoccuring location, although there are several different parts of the house (kitchen, study, basement, yard) that are used. So even if they're at Bobby's place every other episode, the scenes will still be in a variety of locations, if that makes sense.)

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
People do make mistakes, you know. When you've grown up with bucket seats, you tend to automatically picture them no matter how many times you've watched Supernatural.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
This is true, mistakes happen. The only thing that would really bug me is if the error is pointed out to the author and they don't learn from it. I can live with them not fixing the mistake, although I don't imagine it would have much effect on their overall plot and probably only mean changing a single sentence. But when they continue to write fic and ignore the fact that they're bench seats, that turns me off the fic.

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's a big difference between it being a mistake & just not caring.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
damn what a waste of energy op

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's a small nitpick, but it bugs me too.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel; poorly researched gun!kink pisses me off to no end. I mean, sometimes when an author writes something so preposterous I want to punch my shake my screen and yell "That's not possible! Do you even understand how guns work? Why have you conflated revolvers and pistols??" Aaaargh.

/no one in fandom seems to have first hand experience with the care and feeding of firearms

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I love writing/reading about guns, I try to do all the research, but I've never had occasion to actually use them and I'm still afraid of writing about guns (among other things) in case I mess something up. Do you know if there are any good meta/notes on guns for writers I could read, especially if they're SPN-specific?
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (driving lessons)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Dude I don't even watch SPN and I know old Impalas had bench seats. Pretty much all American cars made up until a certain year (I want to say early eighties) had bench seats. I kind of really wish they'd bring the bench seats back but I guess they won't do it for safety reasons or something (not that I'd have more than one person riding up front, I just like them because they're convenient for other reasons)

I don't even know that much about cars, wow

[identity profile] false-alexis.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Bugs the hell out of me, too. And it's a detail that will make me back-button if I'm not already pretty invested, so... yeah, OP, I feel you. (Of course, I make all sorts of different mistakes in turn. Oh, well.)
ext_81845: kai shiden w/ an awkward expression, from the manga gundam: the origin (awkward)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not only that but from a porn standpoint ... so much potential with the bench seats

Just saying

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in awe of your judgment priorities. With so many stories out there having Dean act like a beaten wife, Sam like a serial abuser and Castiel like a 3 year old in diapers this is what bothers you?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
This x100. Particularly the last point. It boggles me that so many authors have mistaken "doesn't understand human customs" for "severely brain damaged to the point of barely being able to function."

If I ever write Impala fic, I'd probably change it to be a stick shift instead of automatic transmission.

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
But it's okay if they're not "die-hard" fans, right?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
What bugs the crap out of me is when people write pre-series fics wherein the boys are exorcising demons. Did they not see the same episode I did wherein they had to desperately search their fathers journal just to figure out what the fuck they were dealing with, let alone how to get rid of it? It's a stupid little thing, but it drives me INSANE.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2011-11-09 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, oh yes, oh yes. So annoying.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I know it was a long time ago but if fandom can remember that Dean's afraid of flying you'd think they could remember that rather important piece of information?
tabaqui: (impalabyfuesch)

[personal profile] tabaqui 2011-11-09 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
YES.
Sheesh. And it's an automatic, not a stick. And despite that one *very* wrong scene in the pilot episode, the seat backs do *not* recline. ARrgh.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
ilu ♥

[identity profile] u2angel.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
That bugs me too! Sometimes I'm tempted to comment and point out their mistake but I never do. Same goes for when the write her as being a stick shift instead of a column shift.

[identity profile] oohasparklie.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Good lord, there is just no limit to how picky and stupid fandom will be, huh? No wonder fans eventually hate every show they start out loving...you nitpick it to DEATH and ruin it for yourselves.
