You're not alone, OP - there's a lot of genderflipping in fanfic. Admittedly, it's more prevalent in some fandoms than others, but it's out there. ^___^

I do this all the time, anon - especially since most of my fandoms are so guy-heavy. I keep wishing I could comission someone to draw my lovely little all-girl!verse so I could have it in physical form forever. :D

...if you make the male characters female, isn't it a given that all the het ships will be femslash? Am I missing something here?

Well, male-dominated fandoms are often slash-heavy. If you don't genderflip the women then the few het pairings will be femslash too? That's my guess.

I used to hate genderflipped art and stories. Now, I love genderflipped fanart and I'm learning to like the stories too. It's one way to get female gender representation in a show/fandom. It's one reason I'm loving Once Upon a Time--it's definitely more gender balanced than most shows seems to be and the women aren't sidelined--they're major players, Snow White, the Queen, Emma. Minor so far Red Riding Hood, her Grandmother, etc.

I do that genderflip thing too with fanfic stories. I guess I'm wanting to try writing again and femslash at that? I especially when I'm reading porn fics, find myself rewriting them from being male to female and wondering/writing in my head how the sex scene would go and keep the power differentials in the fic (I enjoy from vanilla to BDSM fics).

I'm also doing this while watching tv shows like Ringer. I keep wondering how it would go if Bridget was straight(ish), her sister Siobhan was a lesbian and involved/married to a woman with their kid. It's fascinating to play it out in my mind. Would Bridget fall for the wife who is treating her nice and giving her expensive things and treating her as if she was a worthy person for the first time in her life? How would she handle the lesbian sex? Would she break up with her wife? Etc.
