I don't know much about Gackt or the cost of subtitling DVDs so I'm just going to sit here and make up my own story about why someone is dressed as a giant bunch of grapes.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea who these guys are, but I'm off to youtube to check them out because of that screenshot alone.

[identity profile] ms-cucumber.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks. Sadly, I can totally relate.

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Most likely because of the time & cost of subtitling. That's just a guess.

At least the Europe documentary & R&RII documentary were subtitled, so that's a start over some other bands releasing no subtitled dvds, yes?

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
What I can never figure out, is how/why a great deal of Korean concerts/movies are English subtitled, and yet, not a single Japanese one I own is unless it's a bootleg.

Now, to me, the concerts aren't that big of a deal, as someone usually fansubs the talks/behind the scenes bits, but it always baffled me that Korea seems to understand that North America/English speakers watch their shit, so how did Japan miss this memo?

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
probably because japan has a pretty healthy music industry and korea's needs all the help it can get. therein lies the importance of the hallyu wave. :/ they need the international fans more than japan does, i think.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Really? That surprises me considering how many popular Korean singers/bands there are. Not saying it's not true, since I really have no idea, but it does seem strange.

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
there are tons, yeah, but the music industry itself is really messed up because their digital sales are miniscule (because shity music sites like soribada sell entire albums for like A DOLLAR) and they invest so much money in training idols that they have to send the more established bands to japan to actually make some money. so much of the korean music industry is based on exporting what they have elsewhere, because the market in korea is just not as interested as they want it to be. it kinda sucks because these kids work really hard and they have to work even harder overseas so their company can recoup the losses in training them in the first place.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
That's why so many Korean groups/singers focus in on promoting in Japan, because they can make money there.

Also, the reason they don't sell well is mainly because piracy is REALLY prevalent there.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
especially the japanese singers who have large western fanbases and/or are trying to break into the west.

i know subtitling costs money, but i can't imagine their western sales wou'd be so bad that they wouldn't cover it.

[identity profile] gershwhen.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
He's flashing in that grape costume, right? That is he penis? Or am I misinterpreting?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fake penis ;D

[identity profile] pyroyale.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Apart from the DIABOLOS documentary, the Kenshin documentary, the RRII documentary and the European Tour DVD you mean??

Yeah. Never subs anything!

It would be nice to get subbed Platinum Boxes, but as they`re only limited releases I doubt it will ever happen.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, that's only 4 DVDs...out of the countless DVDs he's released.

(I'm still miffed we only got a documentary for the European DVD and didn't get the full concert with it. I loved the documentary, but still...)

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's still more than a lot of Japanese artist's dvds, though.

Also, the Platinum Boxes aren't really for international fanbases, as the other dvds are. You mostly get them from either his site, or Amazon Japan. Makes more sense to sub the concerts & documentaries than the Platinum Boxes. His most recent releases are getting subbed though, so we can only hope for more.

But still, it's more than other Japanese artists.

I missed a couple too... I don't expect anyone to subtitle live DVDs personally, so it's only the documentaries really and he's doing better with those. I think that until they actually get proper international releases, like the Euro DVD, it won't happen.

Meh, I was happy with the Swimsuit Live. If there had to be only one YFC DVD, I'm glad it was that one (ignoring the FC only Otoko Matsuri here XD)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get it either. It's not like it costs a fortune to do that. Subtitling is one of the cheapest things to do although translation can be expensive but seriously, it doesn't have to be. Hire a bilingual fan, sheesh.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 05:22 am (UTC)(link)

Um, Gackt has overseas fans, yes. I'm a fan of JPop and I know the deal. However, JPop stars are definitely more well-known in Japan, and for the time being most artists there seem to be focusing on expanding in Japan and/or the rest of Asia. Which is pretty wise, considering some KPop stars trying to make it here... and not doing well (I'm looking at you, BoA.)

I mean, I feel you, and I know I wish that more of my JPop stuff was subtitled. And that I could buy everything they sell and not have to go through a special service that would cost more than the item I want to buy.

Overall, though, Gackt's English speaking fans most likely are FAR outnumbered by his Japanese fans, and so it really just doesn't make sense to pay all the money and effort to get them subtitled.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What would be the point for them? It's not like they have much in the way of official marketing channels in the West. Anyone hardcore enough is going to buy it anyway, subtitles or no.

Ah, the fan sense of entitlement.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-10 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
There aren't enough foreign fans, so it's not profitable.
