That bothered me even as a kid.

And, as a slightly older kid, I started wondering where the appropriate government authorities were and why NONE of them were paying any attention to the horrific stories which were clearly circulating.

This. It was especially annoying when Hortensia(sp?) said to Matilda, "Would your parents believe you?" as an explanation for why the school hasn't been shut down, because I always answered with a "Yes!!!"
Hell, one of my teachers called me a "bitch" once and my parents were in that school so fast...

I was like "But... but OFSTED inspections!" for a long time. And then I realised OFSTED weren't around when it was written. But I was still like "You're telling me no responsible adults live close enough to the school to see a child thrown out of the playground by her pigtails?" I mean, even assuming we take the "nobody would believe you" as-is.

But even then it falls flat, because it says that the parents are as scared of her as the children. And yet it keeps. On. Going. Nobody's on the school board saying "Ms Trunchbull, we think you should take early retirement", nobody's talking to their county council about it or going to the police when a teacher threatens them (and I mean the parents, not the kids, who it's heavily implied she also terrorises), nobody's, you know, pulling their kids out of the school owned by a woman everyone is terrified of...

I know there's the whole fact that it was written in a time of much harsher discipline, but in that whole town, nobody took Ms Trunchbull to the authorities for the GBH which would presumably arise from THROWING CHILDREN AROUND BY THEIR HAIR?

It's why Matilda was one of my least favourite Roald Dahl books. Even as a kid, I just didn't have that sort of suspension of disbelief.

Yeah, me too! It was a weird experience, watching that movie as a child with parents who would back her up no matter what. On the good side, it did made me realize that I had it good and I came to appreciate my family.
