Then why didn't Hikaru Utada manage to do well on anything but one song on the dance charts? She has an American accent, she was born here. Her record was produced by Timberland, too, and he's turned a lot of pop singers into hits.

I mean, I guess "Like a G-6" was a hit, but...well...why?

You couldn't see that they were Asian. People want ~their music~ to be done of people ~like them~, which is why smooth pop-ballads are white guys, hip-hop acts are black guys and Shakira/Ricky Martin are their own style.

You vastly overestimate the degree to which average people care. If it's statement/culture music like rap, yes, the image matters, but chart-toppers are made primarily by lots of fairly music-apathetic people buying an album, and most fairly apathetic people hear something on the radio or from a friend and buy it if they like it. An oldie but an ideal example: the number of people who had no idea that Rick Astley is a scrawny white guy.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's true too, but to be breaking through a face is needed for the music nowadays in the media world we're living in and average people do not care consciously, but it's still common for "races to keep together".

I think I once heard that 50% of the people that buy hip-hop and rap are white teenagers, so I'm not so sure that's it.

let's be real... her music was plain and boring as heck. who cares who produced it, if it came out sounding vanilla and forgettable?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Hikki's American music had nothing on her Japanese music. It was bland, generic and had atrocious marketing. I didn't even know she was trying to break the charts in America until after she failed.

Yeah, I was disappointed that the ship has sailed after I finally heard about it.

Hikaru's lyrics sucked (the US album, not her regular Japanese albums which had lovely lyrics and music). Cause seriously, "You're easy-breezy and I'm Japanesy?"

Granted there are songs out now with as nonsensical lyrics, but that did not help her at the time.

[identity profile] forthefluff.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
True, when I first heard that song I nearly choked with laughter.

Exodus was kind of weird (even Hikki calls it an "experiment") and This Is The One was just terrible. IDK, I think if she had relied more on her Kingdom Hearts connection, her music would have sold better. The promotion she got was really terrible. Also, those "Easy Breezy" lyrics >____>

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously! If she had tried to debut with something like Simple and Clean (or hell, why not just debut with Simple and Clean itself), I think she would have done far better.

Just ramp up the marketing and she'd have been set. People fraking love that song.

Did you ever see her In The Flesh concert? Because This Is The One sounded AWESOME when done in a rock style. I agree that the album version is boring as hell, but the rock versions she performed were just awesome. I don't know why she didn't just do that in the first place.

Utada's English-language music is basic as hell, though. :c
