Movies you have to watch every Christmas?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it's:

Muppets' Christmas Carol
Gremlins
Elf
Die Hard
Nightmare Before Christmas
Mary Poppins

Okay, Mary Poppins isn't a Christmas film, but it's on tv pretty much every year and I feel weird if I don't watch it.

Watching Christmas Vacation starts the holiday season for my family. :) Also, we love animated specials, so we watch:
The Grinch (the old, proper one)
A Wish for Wings that Work
Rocko's Modern Christmas
Twas the Night Before Bumpy
Nightmare Before Christmas
A Charlie Brown Christmas

Also, the Santa Clause is pretty much my favourite Christmas movie.

Dude- you instantly win for mentioning Rocko.

Oh man, Rocko is so good. We have the special on a glitchy VHS and I dread the day it dies/we won't be able to watch it anymore.

Sound of Music for me! Julie Andrews movies make holidays special for me, so I totally get you.

I also watch British period dramas around this time, like Little Dorrit, Oliver Twist and P&P.

A Disney Christmas Gift
A Charlie Brown Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The Little Drummer Boy

...plus A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the George C. Scott A Christmas Carol (I cry EVERY time), and A Pinky and the Brain Christmas (I cry EVERY time).

Ohhh I love the Garfield Christmas special. We used to have a VHS with all these animated Christmas specials, including that one, but we lost it, so I haven't seen it for years! /csb

I have this old tape of Christmas specials that I ALWAYS watch... in this order.

A Sesame Street Christmas (very old, but good! The one where Big Bird thinks Santa won't be able to get down those skinny little chimneys.)
A Garfield Christmas (Part of it though... got over taped at the beginning)
A Claymation Christmas (Will Vinton anyone? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272045/ trippiest shit ever!)
And lastly A Charlie Brown Christmas. No matter how much I am tempted to get the DVD, there's something about it on a taped video.... you get the commercials from 20 years ago that bring back good memories of Christmas time during my childhood.

Of course, there's Rudolph, Elf, A Christmas Story, and much more that I will watch. =)

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (The awesome 1966 Chuck Jones one, not the other one)
Home Alone
Die Hard
Die Hard 2
Love Actually
While You Were Sleeping

All of which I have on DVD and I sometimes wrap presents while watching. And I usually make sure to catch at least one viewing of A Christmas Story on TV.

I also have second string movies that aren't must-sees (not favorites and necessarily great, but ones that I'm sort of fond of and like to watch occasionally anyway).
Last Holiday
The Holiday
The Family Stone

It's compulsory in our house to watch Hogfather, usually in two parts over Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Also, Christmas with the Joker.
