It never even occurred to me to question this.

My parents weren't half as bad as Matilda's, but they were always pretty dismissive when I tried to tell them that teachers or other kids were picking on me (granted, I was never shot-put out a window or anything). I just kind of assumed it was normal after a while, since that's how the adults act in pretty much every book/show/movie ever.

It really depends on the parents. Some are more willing to listen to their children than others.

I could not tell you how normal or not it is. My own parents always listened to me, and it was disheartening to find out that that wasn't the case in every family.

I don't think that it should be normal to not believe your children, for what it's worth.

This. I mean an extra bit of cruelty on Matilda's part was that she already had neglectful parents as well as an abusive teacher.

Whereas compare what happens in Danny, Champion of the World (also by Dahl). All Danny does is get a cane to his palm and it drives his Papa Wolf dad up the wall and he doesn't want the teacher to get away with it, even though he probably got worse as a kid.

Kinda OT, but my young cousin is in this sort of situation - he's just started secondary, and one of his teachers is a raging asshole who is both incompetent and unpleasant. He mocks them, derides them, and explicitly tells them not to 'bother him' with questions (!). But the weird thing is, his mother - she's the very definition of 'helicopter parent', fussing over every homework and grade, getting onto the PTA, overinvolved in every sense of the word, but she doesn't seem bothered by this at all. What is it with parents letting teachers off the hook, just because they're teachers? :\

that is a really weird thing, that the mother doesn't care o_o
