I would. He's protective and loves his brother. Dean does not routinely punch his brother, especially w/o cause. I can only think of a few instances of it in the entire 7 season run. It's not like Sam's an innocent here either in any way or in why he gets punched. He likes to provoke Dean.

Their father did a real number on Dean while he was growing up so that Dean was responsible for Sam from being a very young child. He was basically Sam's father instead of John, Sam's actual father. I don't think he blames Sam for all of his problems but Sam isn't an insignificant part of them either and most of that lays at the feet of their father and what he subjected the children to.

He's also something of an alcoholic emotional wreck who's incapable of taking responsibility for his own feelings. In seven years, we've seen him deal constructively with his emotions... once? Twice? Sure as hell not consistently or in any way that's healthy. His emotional advice to Sam as of S6 was to push everything as deep inside himself as possible and let it come out in bouts of drinking and violence.

Hardly a ringing endorsement, or someone you want to aspire to be.

And to be perfectly clear, I was joking about the punching thing.
