Lola wasn't "strong and independent" in Space Jam, she was the token unfunny chick with bunny boobies. Now she's an actual Looney Toon.

She went from one bad, overused female cliche to another.

+1

Second this. Ugh.

ayup

[identity profile] twitchy-bunnies.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. That's interesting. I've only seen praise for the changes made to her character. From what I've gathered, a lot of people didn't care for how she was portrayed in Space Jam (too normal, not funny), and are just happy that she's finally behaving like... well, a toon.

This is the first I'm hearing of any complaints about what was done to her. Personally, I like both versions of the character. I would have been all for them taking sp!Lola, introducing some flaws to her, maybe a quirk or two outside of that "don't call me doll" bit (ugh), and having her play the straight man to most of the other characters hyper-active wackiness, but I'm fine with with this new version of her. I actually prefer her.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in Space Jam she was basically a G-rated version of Pamela Anderson's Barb Wire character (right down to the "don't call me doll" stuff). While there's no problem with that character trope, there is a problem with taking a female character in a group that's supposed to wacky and funny (the Looney is right there in the name) and sucking her dry of any sense of humour and having all her supposed punchlines be about her badassery. I feel weird typing this about a cartoon rabbit, but she was constantly drawn to look sexy and provocative and it just fell into the trap that a pretty female character can't actually be funny, even when she's in a screwball comedy. Female characters can look sexy or they can act funny but they can't do both. I haven't seen the new show, but if she's be given the chance to act as silly and ridiculous as everyone else, I think that's an interesting change.

And she's wearing clothes while he isn't. Ah, toons, how you boogle my mind.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, considering Loony Toons is supposed to be funny, having a character like Lola in Space Jam was only good for providing a love interest for Bugs to eventually win over.

I haven't really watched the new LT series, but if she's actually funny and lively in it, then yay. I woulda hoped that she would be more like Babs Bunny from Tiny Toons rather than an obsessed love interest, though.

If you're interested, this is what she's like in the new show:

I still don't accept Lola as part of the Looney Tunes canon. If I want a strong, independent, funny rabbit from Warner Brothers, I look for Babs Bunny. Tiny Toons 4EVER.

Babs & Tiny Toons <3

[identity profile] i-am-drunk-rn.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
it sucks because sexuall agresiveniss was so much a masculine thing back when loony toons were being established like, the whole WOLF AAAOO-OOOOOOO thing they would do when they saw a pretty girl, that was so staple for cartoons! but like, being obssed with a guy is so staple for sexism today. it sucks that sexism is so promininent in our culture that pretty much everything falls under it,

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
They couldn't have found a different idiosyncrasy to stick her with?

Nope, girls get the the love obsessed cliche over and over. >_>

[identity profile] thezmage.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
She's not just love obsessed, she's also really scatterbrained and out there.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Except now she's just Kristen Wiig, and that's NEVER funny.

[identity profile] yourlivewire.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
lmao, truth.

[identity profile] poisonivory.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, Lola should definitely be funny, not a too-serious overly-sexualized love interest. Too bad stalking isn't funny.

[identity profile] yourlivewire.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
well, i was really excited about lola being in the show until i found out how she was being portrayed. so.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Lola Bunny has fans?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Before Lola, wasn't there another girlfriend for Bugs Bunny? I could have sworn seeing something with Bugs Bunny dancing with another rabbit who looked just like him (gray coat and all) wearing a skirt. I saw this long, long ago, before Space Jam. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Lola is the best part of the new show. Haters take a break and gobble up some chill pills, it's just a cartoon, if you want your kids to watch a cartoon with awesome female characters let them watch the new My Little Pony show instead.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Lola was simply put into Space Jam in order to give Bugs a romantic interest.

Nothing more, nothing less.
