Wait, what? Kon's a villain now?

WHY?!

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, unless things changed considerably in today's issue, he's not a villain YET.

Well, unless things changed considerably in today's issue, he's not a villain YET.

They just...took him, erased his memories and put him back in a tank. He doesn't consciously remember anything about who he is, and is being marketed by the writer as having no sense of right or wrong. They were testing him in a VR simulation and he just walked by a woman in a burning house, chatting about how he thought VR!Rose, now a bitch working for a secret organization, was a nice girl. It was written to be ambiguous about whether he did it because he knew it was VR, or because he just doesn't understand right and wrong anymore, but it was enough to make me rage.

The guy writing him is working on both Superboy and Teen Titans, and it's been confirmed that Kon is going to be the Titans' first main adversary (the head of said secret organization is going to use him to get rid of the Titans, as I understand it). I think it's also implied he'll eventually be a good guy, but right now it's all "he doesn't understand right and wrong. He's a glorious weapon! CLONES HAVE NO SOULS!!!!"

It's all insanely stupid. I know it's a relaunch and all, but this is the character who was a ridiculous dork in the 90s when everyone ELSE was being dark and violent, and coming on the tails of (what I thought was) an extremely touching storyline when he realized that, no, the fact that he was born in a test tube in no way impacts who he gets to be as a person. Reintroducing the character to the world does not mean we had to redo that in a dark, violent way instead of a cheesy checklist.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKING FUCK IS THIS BULLSHITTERY. SO. MUCH. RAGE.

jfc, why the hell couldn't I be into Marvel? *weeps* DC just cannot stop themsevles from fucking my favorite character of all time with a lead pipe.

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
But...I didn't even mention the fact that the reason he knew it was VR is because each one of his cells now apparently has its own individual consciousness!

DC took lead pipes to pretty much everyone's favorite characters this time around, I think.

Rather than copying and pasting this post under my own name, I'm just going to say "THIS"!

It'll last one arc. Then he'll be good again and in a love triangle with Tim and Cassie.

Okay, I haven't read the second issue of his new title yet, but I wasn't aware he was a villain. I know in the first issue we see him ignoring a woman in a burning building, but it's also established that he knows the world is artificial and the woman wasn't real. I thought the whole idea is that Kon has been created by Cadmus to be their pet replacement for Superman, to be utilised as a weapon against their enemies. Which is, um, exactly what Kon's origin was before, albeit without the loveable dorky poser goofball personality. Unless this is something that's happening over in Teen Titans, where I thought it was obviously that he's going to end up joining them and being BFFs with Tim, Cassie and Bart (as it should be).

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I read the burning building thing as being "ambiguous", colored by Lobdell and the copy writers nattering on and on about how Kon doesn't know right and wrong because he's a clone and all. He either ignored the woman because he knew it was VR, or because he didn't comprehend the idea that helping someone in peril is the right thing to do. In this fan's opinion, either way is stupid.

He's been confirmed as the first major villain for the Titans. Since DC seems to think the 90s have returned to comicdom, I'm guessing he'll be evil for a while, get some people killed, horrendous things will happen and he'll continue on all "woe is me" or other redeemed hero cliche.

Hey OP? I'm side-eyeing you SO HARD right now, jsyk.

[identity profile] luxis-lil.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Whaaaa...? Well, I hope he and Lex get some father-son bonding in. That could be interesting when Kon inevitably turns good again...

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
WHY couldn't they have left Young Justice alone? Not everything has to grim, gritty, dark, and edgy. Lighthearted and fun is okay, too.

YJ, Impulse, and Superboy were probably my favorite titles during their runs. Why does every title have to take itself so seriously now? Comics need less Batman, Wolverine, and Punisher and more Impulse, Ambush Bug, and Deadpool.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he *is* the son of Superman & Lex Luthor - kid has to "rebel" somehow. Maybe it'll give him a little time with his other dad & humanize them both. Teenagers are tough, I can't imagine having to deal with a super-powered one.

Of course, in fanboy/fangirl land, this would hopefully lead to a conciliation between Supes & Luthor, but I don't think DC is ready for Superman to go gay for Luthor just yet.

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Kon has had his brain and memory ripped out. Rebelling is an act of free will. This isn't Kon making a choice, it's people using him as a tool and him being forced to go along with it. Which is not the character.. He did rebel right from the beginning, iirc. Thought he was Superman, but didn't take anything at face value. Kon was NEVER someone who would say "I'll do whatever you want if it gets me out of here" (which he did in the new 52 has him saying).

So, sorry, but I have to disagree with you. Even if he'd made the choice to be evil it wouldn't have resolved this way.

Spoilers for issue #3

nu!Superboy isn't a villain.

For starters Superboy was aware it was just VR. In the latest issue he even wonders if real people will be as nice as the people he "knew" in the VR. (Later deciding that the VR was much simpler and easier to understand, real life is hard.)

He's awkward around people sure, but give him time. The kid's new. (I typo'd that originally as give him Tim, which... yeah that'd probably fix it too.) He's precocious and seems to realize that his powers make other people nervous. Heck it's obvious his own powers make him nervous sometimes, which is probably why he realized he needed to get far, far away from all the people because he was afraid he'd hurt them accidentally because of his powers.

I don't know about you, but how many DC villains are there who worry about hurting innocent people? I can't think of any off hand.

Just like I don't think he's going to be a Titans villain. Instead I think there's a chance that they'll help him start figuring out that whole living in real life and being a person thing. Might he fight them a bit first? Yeah it's a possibility, but I doubt it'll be because he wants to be a villain.

That said I have to admit that nu!Superboy is one of the few comics that I actually really, really enjoy from the nu!52. I'm looking forward to the next issue and seeing just what's going to happen with her.
