Wrong fandom, I know, but, this is totally why I 'ship Lawrence/Temeraire over any other human/human relationship for Lawrence.

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
YES. This.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
and yet you still don't know how to spell his name....

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
DID I REALLY DO THAT? Omigod, I am such a bad fan I had to run just now to CHECK. Thanks for the heads-up, maybe I won't mess that up in the future. *facepalming forever*

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I read the books a long time ago, and didn't read all of them, but I never got good vibes from any of the human relationships.

So I think you have a point.

[identity profile] winter-ruins.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a Havemercy secret?

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
From the dragon colors it has be Pern. But it does carry over, doesn't it?

[identity profile] winter-ruins.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ahah, I've never read Pern, but it makes far more sense. I was sitting here wondering why none of the dragons looked at all steampunky.

[identity profile] vampslayer04.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. :) Dragonriders of Pern. But it's true for Havemercy, too, now that you mention it. /Not the OP

[identity profile] winter-ruins.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
(Yaaay, copy and pasting!) Ahah, I've never read Pern, but it makes far more sense. I was sitting here wondering why none of the dragons looked at all steampunky.

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a Dragonriders of Pern secret.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Huh...I thought it was an Inheritance cycle secret o.O

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I only liked one of the human pairings, F'nor and Brekke. All the rest of them annoyed me. And my crack!ship was Menolly/Jaxom. I thought they were too much fun together.

[identity profile] kyoto-idol.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely got that feeling, and I think McCaffrey actually said as much somewhere, too; but at the same time, most of the dragonriders seemed to form the closest relationships with other dragonriders, so that through the dragons there was also that psychic component to their human bonds.

…Maybe.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That was certainly the case for those squicky "mating dance" sequences that cropped up in every book. Eh, I was 12, the formulaic nature of McCaffrey's writing really didn't start annoying me till a few years later. (Mostly with the Crystal Singers books, which essentially had exactly the same plot / characters / motivations / etc.) Though the Ship Who Sang sort of broke that mold, at first....

TL;DR the only really interesting part of the Crystal Singer series that I remember clearly is "Passover." /facepalm

[identity profile] dark-puck.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I am going to just come out here and say that you're wrong, OP.

Largely because a dragon-and-rider relationship is a different kind from person-and-person.

Granted, it's been mentioned that rider/nonrider pairings can be strained because it's hard for nonriders -- especially the non-Weyrbred -- to accept that the dragon is the most important thing in the rider's life.

Of course, Weyr life doesn't exactly require monogamy or marriage.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I know that people can be close to more than one person. There are different sorts of love out there. The love you have of your S.O., the love you have of your children and parents and siblings, the love you have of your friends.

I see the dragons as being confidents and wingmen rather than lovers. I love fic where characters are mind melded to animal spirits or something and they act as a kind of greek chorus to the romance going on between the humans.

Of course, for the Dragonriders -- I didn't much care for the human/human relationships because I didn't find her humans to be that likable... oops.

[identity profile] lazzchan.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The main series I liked was the ones that focused on Menolly. :P

[identity profile] shah-of-blah.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just ridiculously excited to see a Dragonriders of Pern secret!

(Also I totally shipped Lissa/F'lar before I knew what 'shipping' was...so nope, OP, don't quite agree with you)

[identity profile] ginpenguin.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I still can't see human relationships in this series that come about due to dragon sexy mating flight time as anything but rape overtones. And I don't recall any of the humans being particularly close outside, to be honest. But that's just me. I'm obviously not a big fan of this series, well, what little I read of it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Eyeroll.

[identity profile] ginpenguin.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I read enough of it to know it was far from spectacular, and hearing about Mccaffery's theory on how homosexuality just kind of cements the inherent strangeness her books have. This is my response your eyeroll :3

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
I can see where you're coming from with that on AM's Pern. The relationship seemed very close and intense. TM's Pern... the dragons come off as oversize pets, so there's a lot more room for human relationships.

Why is this a secret?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is Pern OP is referring to, yes?
