I have a hard time sometimes when people insult stuff I like. (Not just "I don't like it," but "Everyone thinks this is horrible and everyone knows X is so much better.") I feel like they're telling me I'm stupid.

I keep it a secret too though because I feel so immature about it and of course people should say things are bad if that's their opinion.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being upset about this, and there's definitely a difference between "I don't like X" and "X is so dumb how can anyone like it anymore??". The second is offensive and rude.

I'm not above admitting that my perception can be altered easily. I've been learning to just stay away from the negativity and hang out only in the friendly areas rather than sticking it out.

I used to be like that too, OP. :( It made me feel better when I saw cool people who would like stuff regardless of whether other people thought it was stupid or not, and eventually I learned to do the same.

I hope you learn to do the same too, because it's so much more fun when you don't have to feel nervous about the things you enjoy. :)

Oh, OP, sorry about that. Boy, I can relate. That would be why I mostly just read and review fics and fanart, now, these days. I got very, very tired of seeing stuff I loved/liked trashed by others. Sometimes they had a point, most of the time not. They just hated it and wanted to make everyone hate it, it seems, since they would attack you for liking it. "Oh, lol, she doesn't like us "harshing her squee"!" No, I really don't, especially on my LJ. Go away now and you're banned. I no longer seek out or participate in fandom beyond what I said about the fics/fanart. I have little to squee about these days (unemployed, money's running out, student loans I can't get from under, and I don't qualify for unemployment due to not making enough money, currently living w/my mother who is sick right now) and I don't want what I do squee about to be harshed.

Jeez, I even got blasted for a short, funny ficlet about when the Senator melted in X-Men by canon weenies saying that it wasn't canon that the Senator wasn't dead--I posited him getting water powers including the power of being water. It was meant to be funny. OMG, people, it's comics. It's not like people don't die and return constantly. And I don't care it's what the creator of the movie said in interviews; not in movie=not in canon for me.

The rule is that 99% of everything is crap. What nobody adds is the corollary that we all pick a different 1% as the "not crap". Especially when it comes to stories we like, art we like, etc. Avoid the negativity if you can, OP, but when you stumble across it, just shrug and remember that you probably think of something that THAT person likes as being a waste of time too.

that happens to me, too, anon. and it's like... i don't care if people don't like stuff i like? but somehow it makes me feel like i'm wrong for liking it and yeah, it colors my perception of things. which bums me out. :/ i wish i knew what to do to help you but i haven't even figured it out for myself yet.
